Daily Inspiration: Meet Yan Shanklin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yan Shanklin

Hi Yan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It was June of 2021 when I decided to share a little bit more of myself than I normally would. I’ve been on social media for a while but June of 2021 was a bit different. I was going through a break up at the time I would jump on different trends that I could relate to. The most popular trend that I did was a fashion TikTok that showed what I would wear on different dates. They loved me on TikTok so they followed me over to Instagram. I then began to devote an equal amount of time on Instagram and that’s how I built my Instagram following. By utilizing cross posting I also began to build a following on Facebook simultaneously. Moreover, today I still spend time on all platforms and I’ve recently began posting on YouTube and growing that audience. I am also working on my new podcast titled “Yan’s Talking Today” which will be on all platforms. I am still heavily focused on my fashion content as well. Furthermore, they say authenticity is key and I couldn’t agree more because that’s exactly how I built my following. It all began as something fun to do and it’s still something fun to do. I think I’m a little more strategic these days with posting but I’m still the same person that I was when I began this journey. I’ve always said that if I can make one person smile a day, then my day would be made. I aspire to inspire others and that is what my platform is all about today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I first started posting, it was very smooth. It was very easy for videos to go viral and for me to reach a large audience. When I decided to take a break and rebrand that’s when the struggles began. I came back and started posted new things. I stopped doing what worked in the past. I did this because I wanted a fresh start. I get bored with the same content so I try new things. I realized that some of the content that I used to post was the reason a good amount of people followed me, so I lost a lot of followers in the process of rebranding. I would take the same path though because it is important that I’m happy with what I am creating and my brand represents exactly what I want it to represent. My goal wasn’t always to go viral, but it has been to reach as many people as possible. A lot of post don’t do as well as you would think a person with a 100k+ following should and I’ve learned to be okay with that. It’s trial and error learning what works for my platform and what doesn’t. I choose to find the fun in it while also recognizing when it’s time to pivot.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I graduated with my MBA in Financial Management back in 2017. I went on to work for a financial management firm where I was a Client Services Associate. In this role, I managed an office, worked directly with clients and had the opportunity to do some traveling. I am now an Account Manager working in logistics in a fully remote position and I absolutely love my job. It’s similar to my previous role of working directly with clients. I travel a little more which I love doing and I build relationships with each and every single customer. Essentially I specialize in relationship building, client management and customer service. I am known for my positive attitude toward work and being able to handle situations really well. I am most proud of how far I’ve come. Many people see where I am now but don’t realize this is over 10 years in the making. What sets me apart is that I go above and beyond and even though it’s not required there are days where I work late. I’m a team player and I’m always willing to jump in and help others.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is me being in my room writing poetry. I was so proud of my poetry that I would hang it up on my wall. I can remember the first poem I ever wrote, which was called, “Love is a beautiful thing.” I had no idea what love was, but I had an idea of what I thought it should be. I realize now that love isn’t just something you give to others but it’s something that you have for yourself. I am love and I that is why I am always showing love and sending love to others.
