Daily Inspiration: Meet Oona Moorhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oona Moorhead.

Oona, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I consider myself a lifelong artist, and I enjoy pretty much every media. During the pandemic I found myself with an abundance of time to myself, and I began to experiment with art and my space, feeling inspired to make decor that I couldn’t find elsewhere. I started working with unique and vintage materials sourced from other local creatives, and slowly but surely found my niche making intricately beaded mobile sculptures.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the biggest struggle is the imposter syndrome – why would anyone want this weird, frivolous art? But I mean, I started making them because I wanted one, and evidently there are plenty of people here in Cleveland and worldwide that have wanted them!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make one-of-a-kind mobiles out of brass wire and unique, often vintage beads – think Alexander Calder if he was a fairy. I really try to capture as many different vibes, attitudes, and aesthetics that I can, though I often gravitate towards natural and whimsical looks. I’m proud of how unique each piece is; I’ve made close to 200 in the last few years, and I really do think that each of them is a stand alone work. They’re all specially named and numbered, with each unique material listed, and there really is such a magic and personality to each piece.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I just conquered my first year as a mom, and I’ve been trying to get off my screens as much as possible, but paper books are a struggle for me. I’ve been listening to a ton of fantasy audiobooks while I knit, work on mobiles, or cook, and I have to admit I watched so much Game of Thrones when I was pregnant that my daughter recognizes the theme song even now that she’s one.
