Today we’d like to introduce you to Nell LaPaze.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I originally moved from Youngstown to Columbus to pursue graphic design at Columbus College of Art and Design. After my time there I realized that my heart was drawn to editorial, fashion, and portrait photography! I started off by putting any of my friends in front of the camera who would let me style and photograph them, investing in business and education content, and offering A TON of complimentary sessions. The rest is history!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Initially, I promoted my business/complementary sessions about a month before covid started in the spring of 2020. I felt the weight of this more so in making decisions that put everyone’s health first, especially when it came to my newborn photo sessions. There was actually a pretty big baby boom at the start of covid that gave me a lot of time and opportunities to work with many families.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I advertise as a Senior and Newborn Photographer. BUT, because of my love for fashion and editorial photography, I do a lot of sessions for fun experimenting with different techniques that I can integrate in my more regular concentrated work. If I had to pinpoint what I’d be proud of, it would be sessions that I walk away knowing that I captured my client in the truest and most authentic way. 10/10 clients tell me before the session how nervous and uncomfortable they are to be in front of the camera. Being able to break down the walls they have during our time and catch them in a light that showcases their personality or dynamic with others is the most fulfilling part. Before and during every session I strive to connect with my clients on a personal level. I love walking away with new friends!
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Favorite?! Hard to narrow down. One of the coolest things that happen though was right when the show Dance Moms was blowing up me and my dance studio attended a dance convention where we got to take class with the girls and meet them as well as a handful of the moms. They actually filmed an episode of the show there! This was a VERY big deal in the dance world haha.
