Daily Inspiration: Meet Kirby & Cindy Gaboury

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirby & Cindy Gaboury. 

Hi Kirby & Cindy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.

Visitors have called Audio Etc…’s Design Center a hidden gem, a destination place, and a fun place to take your father for Father’s Day. Some have even said that they felt like they were walking through a glorious home, completely forgetting that it was a store. When you walk up to our door you will hear beautiful music hidden in the landscaping and will be greeted by a lovely team member who will invite you to the beautiful kitchen for a beverage and a snack.

Back in 1984, at 21yrs old, we got married, graduated from college, and started our own company and named it Audio Etc… What began as a pre-owned audio/video equipment store in Beavercreek Ohio, later became a high-end store serving the tri-state area.

We bought a 17,000 sq ft facility in Centerville, Ohio. We designed and built a dedicated “home-lifestyle showroom” where clients can experience what products would sound like and look like in their own home or commercial building. We specialize in home theater, whole-house systems and automation, high-end audio/video equipment, theater seating, acoustic treatments, automated shades, lighting, and security cameras. In addition to our residential and commercial custom designs and installation, we will also sell a product that you can take with you at your visit.

Audio Etc… has over 18 Experience Rooms that allow the client to see products showcased in a lifestyle environment so that they can picture it in their own home or business.

In the showroom, you will see the latest audio/video technology in a kitchen, bathroom, billiard room, home office, great room, and patio courtyard. Even vintage items are displayed throughout the showroom to recapture your youth.

Audio Etc… has a highly educated team to help all clients answer any questions they have about the latest in technology to help them meet their budget and audio/video needs. For those who might not like being taken to an audio/video store, you can lounge in our luxurious massage chair and let your partner continue touring.

We also own America’s ONLY Mobile Theater that we use to help non-profits raise money. The mobile theater is auctioned off as “Dinner & A Movie.” Six people are treated to dinner in their home, and then they walk down their driveway to red carpet and stanchions. They enter the beautiful mobile theater and enjoy a full experience, including teared theater chairs that move to the action of the movie.

The Community Room @ Audio Etc… was created to give the business and non-profit community a free space to have meetings. This beautiful 2,000sq ft facility provides a gorgeous full working kitchen, tables, chairs, projector, and screen.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We will celebrate 38yrs in business in December. We have had many highs and many lows. We have had employees steal from us to start their own businesses; some stealing product and others stealing clients. All of this was quite disappointing and put us many months behind each time!

But one of the greatest challenges was 1 year ago with the death of one of our employees who had a massive heart attack driving back from a job. In one moment, we lost a great friend and lead technician and… our main work vehicle. Our hearts were broken as we tried to continue serving our clients with excellence while grieving. We had to rent a work van (eventually buying a new one) and refurbish all the items we had lost in the accident. We are dedicating a reference room in his name, that he wasn’t able to see completed. So come see this special room in his honor. We have recovered as best as we could but still miss our friend, John Steiner, greatly! This horrific setback did not stop us! But we keep on going, trusting God to lead the way.

Our company has won several awards and received several honors. Some of which include the following.
Locally: WiBN Outstanding Leadership, BBB Eclipse Integrity Finalist Award, Featured in and on the cover The Country Club Connections.
State: Ohio’s Business Magazine 500 Most Influential Executives 2022.
Nationally: Midwest Dealer of the Year, On the cover of and featured in Audio Video Interiors and ProSource Magazine.

Audio Etc… has served on several boards, including Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, Kettering Moraine Oakwood Chamber of Commerce, Home Builders Association, BBB Women in Business Networking, Beavercreek Women’s League, and Women in Christian Leadership. We have representatives serving many business organizations and help support several non-profits.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
We enjoy the wisdom of John Maxwell, especially his book “21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”. In addition, “Atomic Habits” by James Clear and Ivan Misner’s “The 29% Solution”. Our daily go-to is “Jesus Calling.” Also, Cindy wrote Chapter 16 in the award-winning book “Success Powered by Relationships by Jeanne Porter.”
