Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamey Leigh.
Hi Jamey, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My dad taught me to play guitar. He was the best guitarist I’ve ever known! I started singing in his classic rock band when I was a teenager and they’d pay me for those gigs. That was awesome to make $100 for a few hours of singing as a teenager! I will always be grateful to the guys in that band for that experience (I attached a photo from that band). I went to college and got my degree in communications and public relations and I currently work for a community action agency as a public relations coordinator. A few years ago, the company I work for decided to convert to a 4-day work week, which was life-changing! It allowed me to focus on my hobbies and passions of playing music again. I wasn’t sure how it would go—whether I’d do it as a hobby or turn it into a little side hustle. I just started reaching out to wineries, restaurants, farmer’s markets, and other places where there could be an opportunity for live music to see if they’d want me to come and play for a few hours. I just did a Google search for these places in the area and did an old fashioned email campaign. Lots of businesses didn’t respond, but a few did and that’s all it really took! I set up my Facebook page and created a website with a song list and my schedule. I’m thankful that I have been very well received in the area and have been solidly booked ever since! I am one of the only female singer/guitarists in the area, so that really gives me a huge advantage. I hope to inspire other women musicians out there to just go for it!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some struggles I’ve had is just getting in the door to some places. There are places I’ve tried and tried to get into but I don’t have a contact or know someone to make it happen. The more I network though, the more possibilities that open up! Getting my name out there, building my reputation as a professional musician, putting that time in—I think that will eventually take me where I want to go! Even now, when I look back from the beginning of my journey until now, I’ve met so many amazing people.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Full-time, I am a PR professional for community action. I always say I have the best job because I get to highlight the wonderful work our staff do in our communities. It’s an amazing company to work for. Everyday, I am inspired by the people who work for such a caring organization that was built for helping others and those in need. Part-time is my work as a singer/guitarist. I am so blessed and lucky to enjoy all the work I get to do in this community. I am really proud that I was able to use my background in communications to really build my music brand. Since I had those PR/Marketing skills already, I was able to build my own website, run email campaigns, order marketing materials and build social media channels with ease. I am also a female, so that has allowed me to carve my own space in the local market. I view my music business as a job. I want people to enjoy themselves when they are within earshot from me. I encourage requests and I’m always having a good time! I try to keep that energy and engagement up so everyone can have the best time possible during my performances.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
If you know anything about the Chinese zodiac, I am a rabbit—which is the luckiest of all signs. I always think about this. I am so lucky to get to do the things I love and am passionate about everyday. Not many people ever get the opportunity to say that, so I give gratitude to the universe daily. I am so lucky. I am so so blessed! I am so thankful to have made such wonderful and strong relationships with so many people in this community and I will be forever grateful for the opportunities that keep coming to me.
