Fiona Shaw

Hi Fiona, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, I always felt a deep connection to fabric, fashion, and the art of sewing. My mother taught me to sew when I was a young girl. She showed me how to read patterns, cut fabric, and construct clothing. It was a skill passed down through generations, and I took to it naturally. These early lessons sparked a passion that blossomed into a lifelong pursuit. By the time I was older, I had turned that childhood pastime into a formal education in fashion design, sewing, and garment construction. This foundation laid the groundwork for her career as a seamstress and designer.
As a young mother, I loved creating for my daughters. Every Christmas, I’d make them special dresses, and for book week and Halloween, I’d design costumes that brought their imaginations to life.
After moving to the United States in 2018, I found my little place in the seamstress world. By 2019, I was working with local theater companies and show choirs, crafting intricate costumes that brought characters and performances to life. I was also working as a seamstress for formal occasion wear, weddings and proms.
I’ve always believed in sharing my skills. So I started teaching sewing lessons and even held embroidery workshops for Girl Scout groups so they could earn their badges.
Then I unexpectedly I was introduced to the world of modeling, which became a vibrant outlet for my creativity and self-expression. It started as a way to explore my confidence and self-love. What began as a hobby soon flourished into a passion, as I embraced pin-up, gothic, and alternative styles, as well as boudoir shoots. Over the past couple years, I had the honor to grace the covers of more than 30 magazines. “Modeling became a way to tell a story through imagery, much like sewing tells a story through fabric.
Today, I primary focus remains on her seamstress work and fashion design. In my spare time, I love working on personal sewing projects, inspired by different eras, blending historical influences with modern aesthetics.
Despite her success in modeling, I view being a seamstress as my core identity. It’s my passion, my career, and my art. Through every stitch, I get to express myself and make something tangible, whether it’s a piece for a bride’s special day or a historical-inspired dress just for fun. It’s my personal journey from being a little girl learning to sew in Newcastle Australia to a published model and seamstress in America. I’m always extremely grateful for where I am today. But always been about passion, creativity, and sharing what I love.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Moving from Australia, to the United States was not without its hurdles. Arriving in a new country with no close family and an entirely unfamiliar environment, I faced challenges many might find overwhelming. It was hard to fit into a new place where everything felt so different. I had to navigate it all on my own, but I stayed true to myself and kept a positive mindset. However, challenges began long before the moved. I endured severe domestic violence—both physical and verbal abuse—that deeply affected her self-esteem. As a woman, I was very shy, I didn’t realize how much ability and talent I had because I was constantly put down and beaten that it was hard to see my worth.
Despite these early struggles, moving to the United States became a turning point my her life. The change offered me a fresh start and new opportunities to explore her talents. “Here that I began to flourish. One of the most transformative experiences was modeling, which helped me to see myself in a new light. Modeling allowed me to embrace who I am and helped me build confidence. For the first time, I saw myself in a positive way.
Another source of strength has been involvement in dance and gym classes. Surrounded by supportive, positive women, I’ve found a community that inspires me to embrace body positivity and celebrate her true self. It is empowering to connect with women who uplift each other. I feel so lucky to have this support. When I’m faced obstacles, I remind myself of how far I’ve come. Staying positive and believing in my abilities has made all the difference. Every challenge taught me something valuable. It showed me that I’m stronger than I ever thought I was.
