Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Brubaker.
Hi Charles, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I wanted to do cartoons as long as I lived. I got published in a student-run newspaper while in college. Afterwards, I did freelance work for comic books and magazines, including MAD Magazine and SpongeBob Comics. I also started my own webcomics, such as “Ask a Cat” and “The Fuzzy Princess,” My current comic is “Lauren Ipsum,” began in 2022.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know if cartooning can ever be described as smooth! I definitely had bumps, especially after my freelance work dried up. I had an unsuccessful stint in animation for a few years on top of that, but so far, everything’s been level with “Lauren” to the best of my ability.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do a comic called “Lauren Ipsum,” which is a spin-off of my earlier comic “The Fuzzy Princess.” Lauren focuses on a rabbit librarian who writes on the side. It’s a humor comic strip in the vein of what you would see in newspapers. I released a book collection earlier this year, and I am currently working on getting the second book out this January.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I always read and watched cartoons growing up. I was raised in Japan for most of my childhood, but I got a healthy dose of both American and Japanese cartoons. I had fondness for cartoons such as “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” “Looney Tunes,” “Pink Panther,” and more.
I was and still am a big cat person, and that’s reflected in my work, which feature a lot of cat characters.
