Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Danger.
Hi Carrie , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like most, my story started with the love of music and talking to people! I was a latchkey kid so I listened to a lot of radio and watched a lot of music television. The idea of spreading the love of music and possibly lift someone’s mood was an exciting thought. Fast forward, I attended the Ohio Center For Broadcasting and found a foot in the door at a radio station in Lima, Ohio. Now, some laughed at me saying, “Radio is dying, why would you set yourself up for that failure?” some doubted me completely when I declared… “One day I’ll be afternoon drive.” Don’t let anyone put doubt in your heart.
Sure enough, a year after my first gig I landed Afternoons at WLKR in Norwalk Ohio. What a great station to learn and grow into the On-Air Personality I am today. Like many, I did seek other opportunities outside of the business for a few years but I found my way back to the airwaves. Knowing the right people and landing 7p-12a at my current station, 107.3 Alt Cle.
Now, life will hand you some hard and dark times… and it sure did me dirty. Due to those hard times I turned to alcohol, I’m not proud of that time in my life but I didn’t see a problem. I had a great full-time on air gig, I paid my bills and I was FINE… right? Nope, eventually I had to look in the mirror and admit that I had a MAJOR problem. After many attempts I finally kicked my love of booze and found God again.
Now I don’t know if it was a reward or what but shortly after I changed my life for the better, I was promoted to Afternoon Drive at 107.3 Alternative Cleveland and haven’t looked back! Now 2 years sober, smoke free and working my dream job in Cleveland Ohio… things are great! I now have a passion of sharing the beauty of music, sobriety and mental health awareness!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
You know, I like to think it was smooth road but in reality it was a bumpy one. I idolized my incredibly strong mom, Robin, she was my best friend. We had a very Gilmore Girls relationship. She was taken from this earth far too early to a freak car accident. That shattered my world, my heart still aches and always will. Grief knows no timeline. Shortly before my mom’s accident, I experienced the ultimate betrayal and found myself filing for divorce. I turned to booze, my friend on lonely nights, ol’ reliable to take the edge off of life’s hard days. Now, I found myself drinking every single day. Just boozing it up and not able to see clearly, I didn’t realize that I had entered an abusive relationship. Verbal, emotional and mental abuse, will turn you into a shell. I became unrecognizable. I finally found my way out of that and into therapy. This is where the story gets good! It took a while and many attempts but after intensive therapy (once a week for months) I reprogrammed my brain and found my dream man… BUT he doesn’t drink or smoke. Thank goodness he could see past my love of beer and we fell in love, he has been such a rock in my life. More supportive than I ever knew possible, he even joined me on the journey back to God. Here we are, both working on ourselves individually and as a couple. Love and laughter flows! 2 years alcohol free and I want everyone to know you will have to face everything you drank away, head on. It’s hard and it’s going to make you cry but I promise it’s worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My job is so much fun! I work as On-Air Host of the Afternoon Drive on 107.3 Alternative Cleveland, weekday afternoons from 2-7p. I basically hang out with you on your afternoon commute, we laugh and talk about silly things!
I would say I’m the most known for The Danger Zone, a play on my on air name, where I bring 2 new songs to the airwaves. Really I would have to say I’m the most proud of being myself on and off the air and bringing the love of music to anyone who feels like listening. Having a peppy afternoon companion and a great song can turn your day around. Now look, this is not coming from me, I have been told that I am very authentic and I do think that sets me apart. You can just tell, I love the songs as much as you do!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I want to share that you are so worth it. You are unique and special, the world needs you. If you ever feel alone, put on the radio, I would love to hang out and listen to music with you. Please always take care of yourself, you deserve compassion for yourself. I’m big on self-care and therapy. Give it a try, nobody really thinks they need it till they try it for a solid 6 weeks. It’s life changing. Go for a walk, doesn’t have to be a long walk, just be outside if you can and breath in the fresh air, look at some trees. Whatever you do or don’t do, just take care of yourself. Self-care is not selfish.
