Daily Inspiration: Meet Caroline Eyer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Eyer.

Caroline Eyer

Caroline, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, my name is Caroline Eyer, and I am a 25-year-old photographer currently living in Ohio. I started taking photos when I was about 12 years old and fell into a style of dark and moody but also candid and natural. I really enjoy capturing moments and feelings and hope my viewers can look at a photo and feel the emotion.

The very first photos I started taking were self-portraits. It was challenging and new, and I could always create exactly how I wanted the photo to turn out. Now, having taken over a thousand self-portraits, it is still now one of my favorite forms of photography.

Aside from self-portraits, I also enjoy taking portraits of other people, fashion, and landscape photos.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Through my many years of photography, finding creativity and my own style was easy at first. There is a whole new world of endless sights to capture, photos to be made, and you are quite literally seeing the world in a new lens. As the years go on, creating for myself and coming up with concepts/direction has become more challenging. I see it all as overcoming the struggles of growing up. People change, scenery changes, and suddenly everything that I become so comfortable photographing changed.

I gain inspiration now through song lyrics and poetry. Creating a scene of what I think that lyric or line may look like has become a great exercise for my mind.

Trying not to compare my work to other photographers is also hard but is necessary not to compare. I am excited and so lucky to be a part of Cincinnati’s creative community; I hope to help create a fun and inspiring group.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I really enjoy capturing portraits and lifestyle. The candid moments are often what I live for, and I really love bringing out the small details that may be overlooked. I am not a complex editor of my photos and enjoy a more natural feel. I want my work to be recognizable by the style and tones of the photos.

I started doing mirror photography back in 2014 and have gained a new perspective from working with mirrors. It’s interesting to learn angles, set the scene in the background, and forced to move around. I (somewhat) specialize in mirror self-portraits because it’s a way for me to be alone in my own creativity and make the image that only I can control.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is what you make it. I can be successful by creating an image that I am simply proud of. It does not even have to go anywhere as long as I am happy and proud of that image. I think in the grand scheme of things, being a successful photographer is simply making it your entire living. If you can do photography full-time and you love what you’re doing, then you’re doing something right!
