Daily Inspiration: Meet Ben Hatmacher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Hatmacher.

Hi Ben, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So I have owned a tattoo shop in Chillicothe for about 15 years now (Grimey Inc Tattoos)
It has always done well but I knew wanted something more. I wanted some way to give back to the community. In 2018 after an injury I had 8 vertebrae fused together. Spent a lot of time in the hospital as well as a lot of time recovering. That is also the date that marks my sobriety. The day I got out of the hospital was the day my personal fitness journey began. With that journey came a lot of personal growth. I instantly fell in love. Then came the idea of starting a gym. I wasn’t super knowledgeable in the area but I have always been the type that if I don’t know something I will figure it out!! I have three teenagers that all went to the gym regularly. So I thought it would be the perfect way to get my kids involved as well as continue to connect with them. So I took notes on what I thought would make the perfect gym. Researched different equipment, different trends, and anything involving fitness and personal growth. Then years later I finally pulled the trigger. Found the perfect space. (Literally next door to my tattoo shop) so then ordering all the equipment. Choosing design, color scheme and layout. All of that was considered.
I love downtown Chillicothe. It has become such a beautiful place! So again I wanted to give back as well as be a part of Chillicothe’s growth!! The gym has been such a pivotal piece of my life that I felt like I wanted everyone to experience this with me. January 1st the gym opened. Then in May we put together a menu and opened a small cafe at the front of the gym. Offering smoothies/açaí bowls/salads/wraps and many other healthy options. Bottom line I wanted easily accessible healthy options.
I am excited to see what 2026 will bring. A lot of idea for the gym as well as other ventures.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were definitely a lot of obstacles on the way. Permits, health dept, building dept, inspections, the list goes on. It was a lot but I just took it as it came. Literally take a deep breath and approach the task at hand. Ohh yeah. Try to not get too overwhelmed in the process. All things considered it wasn’t bad. It was a lot but Iove overcoming. Anything really. Our small victories are what set ourselves up for the big victories!!!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been a tattoo artist for over 20 years. I have owned my own shop for almost 16 of those years. I would have to say tattoos are what I am most known for in this area. Other than the fact I used to get into a bit of trouble in my younger years. But we don’t need to talk about that. Lol Most proud of my kids and their accomplishments. Without question. I’m not sure if it is something that sets me apart but I care. Genuinely care about the community. The gym as well as the food prepared is all to encourage/help others to take care of themselves. A healthy body equals a healthy mind.

What were you like growing up?
Pretty normal life growing up. Was adopted at birth. Two older brothers. Then had a younger sister. Played baseball/football/ was in the orchestra. Outside all day every day. Rode bicycles everywhere. I feel like I had a very normal very Midwest life growing up. Lots of friends. Lots of activities.
