Today we’d like to introduce you to Anya Kwan
Hi Anya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my dance journey in the former USSR, starting with ballet at the age of five, followed by ballroom and Latin dancing. Growing up on a military base, I was always drawn to the arts—dance, music, and visual art captivated my creative spirit. My passion for dance led me to compete in ballroom dancing throughout my school and college years.
On July 4, 2002, I immigrated to the United States, where the popularity of “Dancing with the Stars” was soaring. This timing allowed me to quickly establish myself within the dance community. It was here that I met Gordon Kwan, a Cleveland firefighter and professional ballroom dancer. Together, we built a life filled with dance and family, raising three wonderful boys who also share our love for dance. Today, we proudly own and operate KwanHub, a vibrant ballroom and Latin dance studio and event space in Westlake.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey hasn’t always been smooth. Adapting to a new country presented its own set of challenges, from cultural adjustments to language barriers. Starting a business also came with its hurdles, such as navigating the intricacies of entrepreneurship and establishing a client base in a competitive market. Balancing family life and a demanding career required careful time management and immense dedication. Despite these struggles, my passion for dance and unwavering support from my family helped me overcome obstacles and build a thriving dance community at KwanHub.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At KwanHub, we specialize in ballroom and Latin dance, Argentine tango, West Coast swing, and hustle, catering to students of all ages and skill levels. Our boutique event space can accommodate up to 50 guests, making it perfect for intimate gatherings and dance events.
I thrive on creative collaborations, such as those with the Tri-C Jazz Festival and other creatives, and I have a passion for producing shows. I am always seeking opportunities for my youth and adult groups to showcase their skills and talents. One of my proudest initiatives is the Shine Bright Project, which empowers our dancers to shine and excel both on and off the dance floor. We also work with hundreds of wedding couples to make their first dance a fairy tale. Our family-oriented environment, where even my three boys participate, creates a unique and nurturing space that stands out in the dance world.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor and building a strong network are crucial for personal and professional growth. Here are some tips that have worked well for me:
1. Be Proactive: Don’t hesitate to reach out to people you admire. Attend industry events, workshops, and conferences where you can meet potential mentors and network with like-minded individuals.
2. Join Professional Organizations: Becoming a member of dance associations or local business groups can provide valuable networking opportunities and resources.
3. Leverage Social Media: Platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook can be excellent for connecting with professionals in your field. Engage with their content, share your experiences, and participate in discussions.
4. Offer Value: When seeking a mentor or networking, think about what you can offer in return. It could be your skills, time, or support for their projects.
5. Build Genuine Relationships: Focus on building authentic connections rather than just transactional ones. Take the time to get to know people and understand their journeys.
For me, collaborations with creative professionals and participating in events like the Tri-C Jazz Festival have been instrumental. These opportunities not only expand my network but also allow me to learn from others and share my expertise.
