Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Kacen.
Hi Abby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been an illustrator and cartoonist for the last seven years. I recently moved to Cincinnati from Athens, Georgia, working in the nonprofit field. My practice as an artist is rooted in storytelling, DIY, and community-building,
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Moving to Ohio has made my practice as an artist a bit of a challenge. I didn’t know anyone when I moved, but living in the Midwest has opened up my opportunities to participate in festivals and meet with many other cartoonists located in the Midwestern sphere. I still feel very connected to my home in Georgia, and the perspectives I’ve gained since I moved have informed my creativity and growth as an artist.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a self-published cartoonist and have been running in the zine scene for several years. My first book, Sid & the Sickos, was printed in 2021. And I’ve also been running a resource-sharing and community-building website, www.keepitweird.art, where I share artist resources for free. What I love about my niche pocket of the arts is that the biggest reward comes from the communities within.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
