Conversations with Vernon Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vernon Williams.

Vernon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am one year into my role as the Resource Developer at Shoes 4 The Shoeless (S4TS). I first came across the organization as a volunteer a few years ago, and I was tremendously moved by seeing how a simple act of kindness can spark a change in a community. Having the opportunity to join an organization like S4TS, where the work I do every day has an immediate, tangible impact, was something I just couldn’t pass up.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say my first year at S4TS has been fairly smooth. As with any new position, there is a learning period that it takes to gain the necessary experience and institutional knowledge needed to truly excel. However, this is an organization where there are so many opportunities to learn and grow that it feels like every day I am gaining new skills and an overall better understanding of how to maximize success in my role.

I wouldn’t categorize this as a struggle, but when I went from being a volunteer to being an employee, there were things I thought I understood about the behind-the-scenes operations that I realized I knew very little about. Over time, I’ve learned the whys behind our process, and it all makes sense.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I came to S4TS with experience as a professional marketer, sales, and coaching. One of the strengths I’ve gained from my experiences is the capacity to be swift and versatile. When I’m able to help my team reach significant goals by using several skills, I am pleased with how my contributions were a key factor in our success.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
My favorite read right now is Sword and Sorcery: Frostfire by Ethan Avery. He’s an Ohio author and also my brother.
