Conversations with Timiko Payton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Timiko Payton.  

Hi Timiko, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started in the small city of Alliance, Ohio. Back in 2011, I started putting my music online. It all started as a way to express me until it became so much more than that. Around 2017, I started gaining momentum. I went on tour after I graduated high school, my merch drops were selling out, and streaming numbers were finally starting to come together, and it seemed as if I could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Until 2020 I fell into a deep depression that I couldn’t get out of until earlier this year. I had to take a step back from music to focus on my mental health and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’m back and I’m better! 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Haha, not really sure those exist. Most of my problems come internally. In constant war with my head, once I win it, it’s over! There will be nothing stopping me. I feel like everyone goes through things that’ll lead them to where they want to go, they just have to get passed it. 

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m most proud of not giving up. There are so many people who started this journey with me and there are few left. I won’t stop until I get what I’m coming for! I’m never satisfied. Reached 2.5 million streams this year, and now I’m trying to reach 5. Done shows with over 100 people in the audience, now I want 1000. Every day I wake up and try to level up, even if it’s in the slightest way. You have to crawl before you can walk. 

What makes you happy?
A lot of things make me happy! I’m easy to please and always grateful. My nieces and nephew put the biggest smile on my face. If I do what I need to, they’ll never have to grow up as I did and nothing can put a bigger smile on my face than knowing that I can be the one to provide that.
