Today we’d like to introduce you to “Shelly” Shalimar Moorman.
Hi “Shelly” Shalimar, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a love for safety and helping others, Years ago my sons and husband would go shooting and hunting and I did not want to be left behind, so my interest in learning to shoot was started there, but one day shooting with a group of ladies and my mom, at our local gun club, one lady brought a firearm that her husband gave her out of the closet in a box and she was so excited to show us while the instructor was at the firing line with other ladies, and we were at the waiting line she brought it out of the box and I listen to my gut and said you should put the firearm back until you get called up to the line, good thing I did because it happened to be loaded. So I asked the instructor is there a place to get educated on gun safety because I wanted to learn and know what I needed to know to be safe and help those around me. So then I became a Range Safety Officer, to a Cheif Range Safety officer to a Home Firearm Intructor, Pistol Instructor, Concel Carry Instructor. Then while teaching CCW, to a friends daughter and I invited her to come and sit and listen to the class, she said she did not want to, because in life what ever happens, happens, this broke my heart, because how many other women felt this way, what could I do to help educate and share. So then the NRA had Refuse To Be A Victim program so I took the class to learn more then added some to my ccw class then later became certified to teach RTBV, then I was a Refuse To Be A Victim Instructor. This has been a process over 10 years, guns themselves are not dangerous, but a lack of education and a disregaurd for safety is. So how can I educate how can I help others to be safe and there are ways with out using a gun, and that is where Self Awareness comes in, there is a difference between Self Awareness and Self Defense, lets be proactive instead of reactive. I have since taught over the years at Youth Retreats, Church and ladies groups and Seniors, College group. Then I just wrote a book with a Frame work of F.E.A.R.L.E.S.S its also a workbook. I also am a Archery Certified Instructor- but now I dont so much teach it but I do share the experince of it, at festivals, kids events ect. and I also do a ladies camp out twice a year spring and fall for the past 5 yrs or so, to give ladies the experience of the outdoors. Part of what I do is -Don’t Be A Target is the brand and the book name and it is a Movement for Women the Company name is Arrow N Bows LLC.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning and trying to figure it out has been a journey, many great opportunities. But what broke my heart was this year, when I was searching for a local Accounting firm to bring my paper work back close to home instead of an out of state firm who was recomended to me that I used for 2 years in Utah that did not work out as well as I was told they would. But while interviewing for an accountant I was told that my Arrow N Bows Llc. was a hobby and that I did not make enough money that they did not want to do my taxes, at that moment it was like a gut punch, I thought wow God- do I give this up? Do I just stop? But then I got a phone call, a lady started asking me about my thoughts on safety and on some other stuff and we talked about an hour and she said I never knew you knew so much, then I thought I do know alot but how, what do I do with what I know? I love inspiring I love teachibng, then I got another call inviting me to be on a pannel of professional, helping trauma survivors, then another call to do a demo at a collge event, so then that was Gods way of telling me I am not done yet. But on the other hand I got my old accounting firm to take me in and he was very supportive. While fixing that hurdle. Then I was able to focus on what God had next, and that was with Blu Impression Publishing to write my first book “Don’t Be A Target” How to Build Confidence, Set Boundries, And Protect Yourself In a Dangerous World. this book is not about fear but its about empowerment how every woman deserves to feel confident, prepared and powerful in every enviroment: at home,at work, during travel or in her everyday community. My mission is to help everyday woman become fearless, not because danger dose not exist- but because preperation and purpose are stronger then fear. With other highlights identify your safety blind spots, fear is not a weakness, growth instead of paralysis. Under standing the OODA Loop, to observe orient decide Act just a few things in what I teach and in the book, real stories real inpirations, just beign real.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Holy crap…. where do I start? Gosh I am what I like to call a assistant to the boss, (office manager)in a Rigging compnay, I love numbers I love working and seeing results so I have not given up my w-2 job. But as for teaching I like to make it applicable to our lives today. How can we impliment simple but safe options with out spending alot of money. A simple as a sharpi or a airhorn, People often tell me how they love how I make it real and relatible, how to help become inspired to want to be safe. What sets me aprt, My Smile and attitude. you do you boo. Oh and now I can say Author, a two time Author, Don’t Be a Target, and God’s Not Complicated.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My smile, my attitude, my drive being a Safety Advocate, Confidence Builder, Purpose Driven Protector. Having compassion and keeping God first. How to build your tool box, what to put in your tool box for safety, simple moves and how to use your voice, giving yourself permission to use your voice,and bringing in Bob the dummy for hands on to know how an impact feels and playing through your mind, palm strike- nose, eyes, ears, stomp giving them something. just opening the mind to options to where you dont have to be a victim.
