Conversations with Priyanka Berry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Priyanka Berry.

Hi Priyanka, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been fascinated with photographing candid moments. It started with film photography as a kid and then digital and mobile phones. But what really got me interested in learning and developing the technical aspects of photography are my two girls. I wanted to freeze their childhood as best as I could and then it took me in the rabbit hole of photography. Each year I look back at the past years and feel amazed at how much they have grown and the memories we have made. This is what led me into business part of it too. I want to document real lives of people in the same way I do of ours. Authentic moments move me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road for sure. More often than not clients do not want to invest money for a family photo shoot. And it’s a struggle in finding clients that value your art. Photo sessions are so much more than having expensive equipment and clicking pictures. It takes a good photographer years of training to know when to click and how to edit those moments. Most of my struggles are explaining those to prospective clients.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love shooting real moments and that is what I am most proud of my work. I try to capture authentic moments that reflect your life. They are so much better than posed traditional pictures. I photograph my kids almost everyday for years together now and that has made me anticipate photo-worthy real moments of kids without making them smile for the camera. That is what makes me excited to pick up a camera.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Authenticity matters a lot to me. In the social media age where everyone tries to portray a picture-perfect life, having authentic moments is rare.

Documentary photography allows me to contain those precious moments. From the messy houses to tantrums kids .hey tell the whole story.

They tell you so much more about that point in time in your life. They will remind you of the sleepless nights and chaotic times.
