Conversations with Mike Lucas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Lucas.

Hi Mike, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career in Bristol, VA doing more traditional news, but saw the changing of the tides a few years in. Fewer and fewer people were consuming news from television and more and more were getting it from their phones. I never thought digital media would be this prevalent, but at least in the sports world, it’s overtaken the old school formats. I took a risk & made the jump from traditional TV to a new medium that was only guaranteed for one year & now the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show has become the #1 digital sports entity in the city. Best decision I ever made.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never easy, but that’s what makes it rewarding. I had to do news to get sports opportunities at my first station. At my second station, we were severely short staffed at times & that made getting great sports content out daily was put on the backburner. UCSS was a pilot project that had no guarantee of working. But all the struggles along the way make the rewards that much sweeter.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My specialty is taking the every day sports conversation and framing it in a way that’s entertaining, informational, and different from the rest of the market. Whether that’s through the lens of a new game segment or just the framing of the question: What you see on UCSS is not how the rest of the city talks about it. And that’s what makes us different.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Reach out, be available, and listen. Listening is the most forgotten skill in the world right now.
