Conversations with Megan White

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan White.

Hi Megan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started doing vendor markets in 2015 selling hand painted furniture and eventually my hand made candles. The candles took off so I pivoted and made that my priority. Over the next couple years I was selling my candles at local boutiques and selling out at markets. By the beginning of 2020, I was ready to open my own shop but Covid happened. After the dust settled and the world opened back up, I opened my boutique in Newtown June 2021.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is no smooth sailing when owning and running your own small business especially in a world of online shopping. To make the shop stand out, I sought out as many women made items and local makers to bring originality to Mercantile that you can’t find on Amazon or big box stores. I also had a goal of being a big supporter of all things local, especially local kids and schools. I host many Shop & Support nights where I donate 10% of sales that day back to local organizations. Local Support is always a trickle down effect. All those causes and kids and schools and charities I support, support me back. It’s amazing to see it all in action.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am hands down most proud of the finacial support I have been able to give back to my community- especially programs for the kids and Leukemia Society

What are your plans for the future?
As far as the future, I am looking forward to surviving as a small local business. It’s very hard. This is my passion but also my livelihood. I am eternally grateful for all the support and love from my customers that keeps my shop open and successful.

Pricing:

  • Majority of my shop is under $50 and this is on purpose. What fun is a boutique if you can’t afford anything in it?
