Conversations with Mackenzie Romagni

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Romagni.

Hi Mackenzie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always worked in a creative field. Before my photography career, I was a content director for a Denver-based food brand overseeing recipe photography, videography and content production.

In 2018, my husband and I moved to Singapore for his job and I began freelancing as a food/brand photographer for small food brands and restaurants. I eventually began shooting professional headshots, brand photos and family portraits; I found that I really enjoyed connecting with others to bring their photographic vision to life.

When my husband and I relocated to Cleveland in January 2020, I made the decision to pause my business to focus on welcoming our first child into the world. I jumped back into my work earlier this year and have found it fulfilling in an entirely new way since having my daughter. Time goes so quickly with kids – being able to capture sweet moments for my clients to treasure forever fills my heart!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is it ever?! Jumping back into my business in a completely new city during a pandemic has not been the smoothest road, but I try to remind myself often that building a business takes time and success doesn’t happen overnight.

I am so grateful for all my amazing clients that support and trust me, and for my husband for encouraging me all along the way; without them, the road would be a lot bumpier!

It’s also been a unique challenge figuring out how to juggle being a new mom and running my business. I’ve really had to focus on prioritizing all those little life things, so that at the end of each day I feel accomplished as a mother/wife/business owner.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a lifestyle photographer specializing in families, newborn and maternity photography in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.

I shoot true-to-color, naturally-posed portraits that capture the special connections between families. Getting professional photos taken is stressful for a lot of people, especially when you throw kids in the mix. I try really hard to put all my families at ease before, during and after their session so that everyone walks away from the shoot feeling good; I want the kids to feel like I’m their new best friend, the parents to feel relaxed and confident, and everyone to have fun.

I love getting a post-session text from a parent thanking me for making their session feel easy or telling me that their little is asking when I’m going to come play again because I know I’ve done my job!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Start where you are. You don’t have to do all the things, or be the very best right out of the gate, just work with what you have. I highly recommend making your business legit from the get-go by setting up your business structure and bookkeeping to save yourself a headache down the line.

And don’t be afraid to invest in yourself and your business. I am a huge proponent of continued learning, whether it’s an online course, workshop or taking advantage of all the amazing free educational content online – it’s always worth it!
