Conversations with Kendall Jensen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Jensen.

Hi Kendall, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Back in college in the early 2000s, I worked at Michaels craft stores back in Idaho, where I hail from. They offer Wilton classes and as an employee, I got to take them for free. After taking all 3 levels, I secured a job in a grocery store bakery. Over the years I worked for a couple grocery stores and a yogurt shop making cakes. I ended up taking a break from cakes for a while. Then I move to Ohio. I was a nanny and had time for a second job so I was hired in the Walmart bakery. After working there for years, my love of cake decorating was reignited. I took some new classes and joined a local cake club. There I met someone who owned a wedding cake business and was looking for an intern. So, I interned for her and then was hired at a local bakery. That job didn’t work out but not long after I was hired at one of Columbus’ top bakeries. I worked there for 8 years and transformed their wedding program. In 2021, I started my own bakery.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have definitely had obstacles. Several of the grocery store I worked for made cake decorating tedious and not fun. I definitely needed a break. Also, the aspects of the job that include difficult customers or difficult coworkers can be large hurdles.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a baker/cake decorator. I mainly specialize in Wedding Cakes. However, I do cakes for all occasions. I love the diversity that comes with my profession. No two cakes are exactly the same. I get to utilize all kinds of artistic skills such as painting, sculpting, color theory, piping, and much more to craft amazing, beautiful, or unique cakes. I am good at recreating cakes that look like inspirational images. Some of my favorite cakes that I have done include plants, animals, and food. I am so proud that I have made over 2000 wedding cakes. It makes me feel so special to make such an important cakes for couple’s big days or for other people’s special occasions. I have even made cakes for famous people including actors, musicians, famous drag queens, and professional athletes. It just feels so good to be appreciated for my talents.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Without risk, there is no reward! Leaving my last job to start my own business was definitely a risk! I also make risks every time I drive with a cake in my car, I have had delivery issues in the past and that always makes be nervous to do it again. However, the cake must arrive!
