Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidy Chu
Hi Heidy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve loved cooking and baking since my 20s. Back in Hong Kong, I owned two cafes, but I soon realized there wasn’t much opportunity for me to actually cook or make coffee—managing from an office desk felt far removed from my passion.
When I decided to move to Ohio to spend more time with family, my sister encouraged me to start baking at home and to try my hand at the farmer’s market. The Worthington Farmer Market was a perfect fit since it’s in our neighborhood, and my mom loves it there. With the support of my sister and brother-in-law handling everything non-baking, I could focus on honing my skills and learning new techniques.
Before starting my home baking journey, I was lucky to work in a bakery that welcomed me despite my lack of experience. This opportunity allowed me to gain valuable skills and techniques that have greatly aided my baking.
2024 marks the third year for The Little Dot, and I still have many Asian pastries I want to introduce on this adventure!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Sourcing specific Asian ingredients can be challenging, often requiring international shipping or personal travel. Limited kitchen space can restrict production capacity, and adapting to customer feedback while maintaining authenticity can be tricky. Despite these struggles, many find the journey rewarding, as it allows for creativity and the chance to share unique flavors with the community!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The Little Dot is a cozy home bakery that aims to bring Asian pastries to Columbus, including cakes, breads, and traditional Hong Kong desserts.
We specialize in creating unique textures in our cakes and soft breads, incorporating Asian ingredients and flavors. Additionally, our desserts have a lower level of sweetness compared to American desserts, making them a delightful option for those who prefer a more subtle taste.
What I’m most proud of is our commitment to using high-quality ingredients, even if it means incurring higher costs. This dedication ensures that our products not only taste great but also reflect our values.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
When people put a smile on their face when they see our products or hear “The Little Dot,”. And when they talk about how much they loved our pastries, that’s success for me!
