Conversations with Emily Norrick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Norrick.

Emily, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After graduating high school in 2011 from my hometown in Lexington, Ky, I attended Paul Mitchell The School for cosmetology.

I started my career at 18 years old, and had no idea just how hard it would be. I stayed in Lexington and did hair for about 5 years before moving to Ohio to be with my now husband. I had to start completely over and rebuild my clientele and everything I had worked so hard to get all over again. I won’t say it wasn’t challenging or really frustrating at times, but what I will say is how much I have grown since that time. I gained more opportunities in a bigger city. I gained education and a clientele who has followed me for several years. I have built relationships and friendships. And most of all, the confidence to love what I do and actually be really good at it. If you would have told me almost 11 years ago that I would be here today, I would have laughed. I worked hard to be where I am today and am so grateful I didn’t give up.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, not at all. Switching salons AND states was brutal. I lost almost everyone I had as a client when I moved an hour away. I struggled financially for a long time and also felt stuck where I was. I wanted to do more and be more, but I didn’t know how in a new place.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist who specializes in blonding, bridal glamour, and extensions. I am known for building relationships with my clients and having them leave feeling as if they made a new friend. I am most proud of how much my confidence has grown. I work hard and really try to make sure that each guest in my chair feels comfortable and loved. I am realistic with guests in their hair goals and communicate how to achieve them in the most healthy way possible.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I try to take time and remember why I chose my career, and the purpose behind it. To make women feel confident and beautiful. I have always felt a calling to invest in women and build them up. I am very empathetic and nurturing. I am very genuine and mean what I say. What you see is what you get. We all have days where we feel insecure and not our best. If I can make you smile or improve your day in any way, then I know I am doing something right.
