Conversations with Emily Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Brown.

Emily Brown

Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started as a photographer in 2018 with the goal to offer affordable photography to all of those in my area. From 2018 – 2021 I was growing, learning as much as I could about this industry, editing techniques, etc. In 2020, my husband and I had our last baby, our fourth, but I knew I wasn’t done with that season of life. A friend recommended me to start birth photography – combining my two favorite things. I attended my first birth in the fall of 2021, scared, completely underqualified, and nervous – IT WAS MAGICAL. I couldn’t stay away. That is the moment that lite the fire for my passion with capturing mamas in this beautiful and venerable season of life. I am so proud to be a part of Mama’s birthing team as her photographer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Birth photography is such a special niche. It was a very hard adjustment to see how I fit in the birthing space without being ‘in the way’, how to capture special moments that happen in an instant, how to be on call. It was all and still is a learning experience. My family and village of people truly have helped me chase this dream and help with my four kiddos when I am on call and have to head to a birth in a gif.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a birth photographer, certified doula, and student midwife. Birth work is my specialty. I am not sure what I am known for – probably being supportive and your advocate in birth. Or maybe a calm soul – I have heard that before! I am most proud of being able to capture such raw and magical moments for Mama and her family. The moments during birth go so fast, and often the mom doesn’t remember it all and certainly doesn’t have time to soak it all in at the moment. The images that I am able to gift to my clients will last them a lifetime and show Mom how truly powerful she is – she brought life to this earth!! I think what would set me apart from other birth photographers is that I am also a doula and student midwife, which just means that I have education and knowledge on how to serve mama during her birth and after baby is earth side.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I highly recommended finding a mentor in whatever niche you choose. It is so helpful to have a friend to lean on and learn from. Photography can be a lonely industry if you don’t find a friend to chat to that can also relate to this world. I always just found people in my community or on social media and would reach out! I think that it is so important to find someone! I often am mentoring fellow photogs to help them navigate CRM systems, better learn their cameras, etc.!
