Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Turner.
Dawn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am Dawn Turner, a wife and mother, a 30-year veteran cosmetologist/business owner, and a 4X-Board Certified Trichologist. I started working in a salon at 17 years old as a cosmetology student at John H. Patterson Career Center. For as long as I can remember, I only wanted to be a hairstylist. As a teenager, I would practice on anyone who would allow me. After many years of working in the salon, I began to notice problematic issues with clients and hair loss. Hair loss issues were almost as common as hair styling choices. My business was focused on my love for hair, and I couldn’t ignore what I was seeing.
In 2016, I became a Board Certified Trichologist & Cranial Prothesis Specialist, where I could begin to help people who were suffering from these issues. Since then, I have combined my wealth of experience and knowledge of the hair care industry with a divinely inspired vision for providing healthy solutions and practices for the scalp, mind, and spirit. In 2018 opened a one-of-a-kind hair restoration facility, In my center, I also educate professional stylists and the general public on the importance of hair and scalp care. While studying under this intensive educational platform, I have innovated Follicle Hair Growth Systems Product Line, which includes 16 privately labeled products that support each individual’s hair care journey. My business models a triumphant life-altering restoration experience while getting to the root of hair loss issues.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For many years learning how to do business correctly was challenging. I started my business out of pocket without any funding or guidance. Therefore, everything was trial and error.
At the time, I did not realize those mistakes would cost me in the latter part of my career, resulting in me closing several businesses and starting over. Finding other business owners and hair care professionals willing to advise wasn’t always available to me. I learned the hard way that what I planned and my reality were two different spaces. It cost me a lot of time and money without reward.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Starting and stopping my business over the years took a toll on me. Those lessons challenged me to create a mentorship group for beauty industry professionals that may struggle as I did.
It’s a safe space to be vulnerable, ask hard questions, and not feel ashamed of how you got there. Being a hairstylist came naturally to me. However, entrepreneurship was something that I had to learn to do correctly. I want to help others so that it doesn’t cost them as much as it costs me.
