Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Haylett.
Hi Christine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always loved Halloween and horror movies. I was out shopping for Halloween decor with a friend about 8 years ago and we picked up some random decoration and said we could probably make that. She went on to make wreaths and decorate skeletons and I started sculpting on Dollar Store skulls. I surprised myself; I had absolutely no idea I could sculpt. I was 45 when I realized I had some artistic abilities. From there, I sculpted into coffee mugs, flasks, bongs, lighter covers. I love learning new skills so, now I’m building things with wood and refurbishing furniture. I try to make everything into functional art.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It comes in waves. At the beginning, it was fun to see what i could make and then I started stock piling and going to Horror Conventions, where is do pretty good, as there wasn’t anyone really making the things I was. I would make enough at each convention to cover expenses and pay for the next convention spot. I haven’t been to a convention in 3 years because it’s died down a bit. I don’t mind, it’s given me a chance to learn new skills.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started Simply Wicked Decor with the intent of just making water bottles, lighter covers, magnets and the occasional “horror head” decoration.l but I recently discovered I’m really good at re-imagining old and/or discarded furniture and I’m really pushing for my business to go in that direction.
I specialize in dark, goth and horror Decor. I think what sets me apart is that’s not the norm for most. Purple are trying to follow the latest trends but there is a group that lives that dark, romantic gothic vibe.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My kids have always encouraged me and get excited when I make something new. They’re all grown and it off the house but they keep up with each new, crazy idea I have.
