Conversations with Christian Key

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Key.

Christian , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Berea Ohio, attending a small Baptist Church with my grandmother. I have always been surrounded by music and have loved the arts. I draw my inspiration from Samoth, John Legend, Kim Burrell and many other artists. I started my ministry at around 9 years old as a dancer often using MIME (white face) as a vehicle to express myself creatively. I was “randomly” ask to sing at a talent show at my high school as a ‘fill-in’ because someone dropped out. So I sang a song by Kim Burrell, and the crowd went crazy! I felt a feeling that was totally foreign to me. I felt complete and totally at one with the music. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that random talent show “drop out” was clearly orchestrated by God, because it sparked my desire and my true love for singing and expressing myself through song. So here we are about 9 years later, and I am still singing and giving praise to God for all that he has done for me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth at all. But it hasn’t been totally tedious either. I have been blessed with a tremendous support system and people that truly believe in me. I have people that desire to hear me, my music and my ministry and that is always a blessing! One of the primary struggles that I experience to date is having the resources to do everything that I would desire to do, one the scale that I want to do it. I am a dreamer and I dream BIG. So when you have ideas in your head, you want to see those ideas executed on the scale that you envision it. But oftentimes, resources are limited.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist and a true creative. I am known for my worship experience and my ability to encourage others and draw people to the cross through song. I am set apart from others because I consider myself the ‘total package’. I can sing, I can dance, I also am an intercessor, I LOVE to pray for others. I am a student of God’s word and would often rather sit alone in God’s presence than, be around thousands of people.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Being yourself always works! People love authenticity!
