Conversations with Brittney Evans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Evans. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Brittney Evans

Brittney Evans, aka DJ Essential’s purpose in life is serving others and directly contributing to their happiness and well-being. By day, she is a Nurse Practitioner who has gained a reputation for going above and beyond to build one-on-one relationships with her patients in an effort to provide exceptional care and support for each. She has dedicated the past 13 years to serving her patients at The Cincinnati VA Medical Center. In addition to caring for patients who have served our country, Brittney is also committed to giving back to the community by serving as a healthcare mentor for nursing students and being an advocate for those who are in need. She believes that sharing her knowledge is an essential component of lifting as she climbs. Growing up in a single-parent home in Downtown Cincinnati, posed its challenges during her childhood, but her desire to be successful and to be a role model to her peers is what prevented her from succumbing to her challenges. Brittney is no stranger to hard work. She began working as a tutor and caterer at the age of 13 and remained working throughout her high school career. She still managed to maintain a 3.9 GPA during high school, allowing her to graduate as valedictorian of her high school class. She went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, a master’s degree in nursing, and a post-master nurse practitioner degree, all while working full-time and raising a son.

For many years, she has been responsible for creating and managing the playlists at family functions and other small events that kept everyone dancing for hours at a time. After realizing that this was a gift, she decided to share this gift with the world and became DJ Essential in 2021. Since the beginning of her career, she has been in great demand. She has been given the opportunity to DJ hundreds of events, including weddings, parties, concerts for locally and globally acclaimed artists, nightclubs, conventions, corporate events, and many other special events. 2023 has been an amazing year for her. Not only did she receive an award for being a Healthcare Hero in her community, she also received three DJ awards (Best UP & Coming DJ, Nightlife Entertainer of the Year, and Best Local DJ).

Brittney is the true definition of a “Go-Getter.” She believes that it is everyone’s duty to identify their God-given talents, and once we do that, we should share our gifts with the world. She believes that life is a journey, not a destination. It is about the experiences you have along the way, not the destination itself. She hopes that her story inspires others to find their purpose in life and stay determined to share their God-given talents with the world no matter what challenges may arise during their journey.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a full-time nurse practitioner, DJ, wife, and mother poses its challenges, but overall, I would say my journey has been smooth. I truly believe that I am living in my purpose. I believe that when you live in your purpose, God clears your path and shows favor, ensuring that those following his lead are successful in everything they do. I believe this is why I have been able to overcome every obstacle that has come my way and have been able to achieve and maintain success. Stepping out on faith and allowing God to guide my steps has been the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My number one goal in life is to make the world a better place by spreading as much love and happiness that I possibly can. This is why I equally love both my nurse practitioner and DJ careers because they both allow me to share my God-given talents with others (i.e., spreading love and joy, helping to improve the lives of others, giving others hope, etc.). My number one goal as a DJ is to be able to share my talent with as many people as possible, and becoming a tour DJ will allow me to do this. I recently had the opportunity to DJ my first concert in an arena for world-renowned artists, which was one of the best experiences of my life. Seeing thousands of people singing and dancing to my music selections gave me indescribable joy, and I want to be able to do this all around the world. The opportunities that I’ve been given in my two years of DJ’ing have been nothing but a blessing from God. He is showing me that I’m living in my purpose, and if I continue to do so, He will continue to allow me to elevate. I have so many great events planned in 2024, from concerts, residencies, private events, etc. Please visit and subscribe to my website, iamdjessential.com, to keep up with what I’m doing this year!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I truly believe that resilience and my faith in God are two of my most vital qualities. No matter what obstacles I’ve faced in life, I’ve always made sure that I continued to press forward no matter how difficult the situation was. I learned from my mother and sister Tenia that things are always “figureoutable.” My mother struggled raising my two siblings and I by herself but never allowed us to know this. She did such a good job raising us that I did not realize that we were poor as children until she told me that we were when I became an adult. Finding out that my mother went without a winter coat at times to make sure that my siblings and I had what we needed, seeing her cook us home-cooked meals at least twice daily, maintain a nice, stable home for us, teaching us the importance of education, etc. are all things that have motivated me to be successful in life and to be resilient no matter what so my mother’s sacrifices won’t go in vain. Having faith that God will always work things out no matter what, is also something that keeps me on the right path. No matter what I go through in life, I never allow things to discourage me enough to make me quit. I believe that if I have God, my family, and resilience, I will continue to be successful in everything that I do.
