Conversations with Andrew Oliver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Oliver.

Hi Andrew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Emerald Photography:

From Shop Floor to Shutter Clicks

What began as a side hustle in a print lab unknowingly laid the foundation for a life behind the lens. Emerald Photography wasn’t born overnight — it was revealed slowly, through years of unexpected detours, creative exposure, and a relentless pull toward storytelling.

My journey started not with a camera, but with a wrench. I was working as a handyman for the owner of Simply Color Lab in Akron, Ohio. Eventually, I landed a spot in their photo production process — unknowingly stepping into a silent mentorship with hundreds of photographers across the country. Day after day, I handled their images, each one teaching me something: crisp studio portraits, sweeping mountain vistas, tender wedding moments. I began to recognize style, tone, and technical mastery. I didn’t have the language for it yet — but I was hooked.

Then came a wild turn: I applied for a product photography job at ECS Tuning with exactly zero experience behind a camera. By some miracle (and a healthy dose of bold confidence), I got the job. Cue the crash course in studio photography — lights, glare, shadows, and angles — all thrown at me at warp speed. With ADHD, I tend to hyperfocus on the things that truly light me up. And this? This was it. I was captivated.

For nearly two years, I honed my technical skills photographing some of the most impossibly shiny car parts imaginable. But life, as it does, shifted. A breakup, the end of college, and the call of home led me back to Geneva — a cozy, sacred corner of Ohio that always felt like a warm blanket in winter. Broke and soul-searching, I picked up work as a machinist and slowly chipped away at student loans, dreaming of the day I could buy a camera of my own.

Seven years passed. I found healing and inspiration in the outdoors, trekking over 1,800 miles of trail with nothing but a pack on my back and an iPhone in hand. But somewhere on those winding paths, the creative itch returned — stronger this time. The landscapes, the light, the solitude — they whispered a calling I could no longer ignore. I finally purchased my first camera, a Canon M50 Mark II, and before I knew it, I was capturing stories again. Not just snapshots — but moments. Real, vivid, irreplaceable moments.

In 2022, I made the leap and founded Emerald Photography, not just as a business but as a mission. My goal? To bottle up time. To give families, couples, and adventurers something they can hold onto — something that says, This was real. This happened. And it was beautiful.

Photography, to me, isn’t just art. It’s time travel. It’s a laugh frozen mid-air, a promise whispered in a ceremony, a mountaintop sunrise that you’ll never forget. In an age where everything is fast and fleeting, I believe photography is one of the few crafts that can keep memories alive and meaningful.

As a young business, I’m still learning. Still stretching. Still saying yes to the adventure. But what I know for sure is this: God had a plan for me all along — and it led me right here, camera in hand, chasing light, and collecting stories one frame at a time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been an easy road — not by a long shot. Ironically, running the actual business has been the easiest part. The real challenge has been internal: pushing through mental blocks, navigating the emotional highs and lows, and staying motivated even when things feel stagnant. That’s the side of entrepreneurship no one really warns you about.

One of my biggest hurdles has been marketing — not just promoting my work, but truly expanding my reach and building a recognizable presence. For a long time, I also wrestled with finding my niche. I shot a little bit of everything, trying to figure out what felt most authentic. Eventually, I found clarity: I’m a Lifestyle and Adventure Photographer. That’s where my heart is — capturing real moments in beautiful places, whether it’s a family laughing in golden light or someone pausing on a mountaintop, completely present.

It’s been a journey of refinement, not just in craft, but in self-understanding. And every challenge has helped me grow into the photographer and business owner I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a photographer, I specialize in story-driven lifestyle and adventure photography — the kind that captures raw emotion in real environments. Whether it’s a couple eloping in the woods, a family laughing in golden-hour light, or a solo traveler breathing in a mountaintop view, my work is all about preserving authentic moments with intentionality and heart.

What sets me apart is the way I approach each shoot: not just as a photographer, but as a storyteller and observer. I don’t believe in overly posed perfection. I believe in movement, emotion, and the in-between — the seconds where something real happens. My ADHD has actually become an asset in this; it gives me an incredible ability to hyper-focus on detail, anticipate moments before they unfold, and remain fully present and adaptive in any setting.

I also bring a unique blend of technical precision (thanks to my background in product and studio photography) and natural-world intuition (from thousands of miles on trail and years capturing landscapes). That fusion allows me to create images that feel grounded, cinematic, and emotionally resonant — whether in a studio, a backyard, or a remote mountain pass.

At the core of it, I shoot with a deep sense of purpose. I want every client to feel something when they look back at their photos — to be transported, to remember, to relive the moment that mattered. That’s not just photography. That’s legacy.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Geneva has always felt like a warm blanket to me — cozy, familiar, and comforting. It has that small-town charm, mixed with the laid-back vibe of a beach town. Nestled along Lake Erie, tourism plays a big role here, and you can feel the rhythm of the seasons in the way the town comes alive. If I could change one thing, I’d love to see more hiking trails and outdoor recreational options. But I know these things take time — and Geneva has always grown at its own steady, intentional pace
