Today we’d like to introduce you to Tory Stover.
Hi Tory, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am the owner of BCA Cuts – a food truck for events in the Central Ohio area. I cook an American style menu, and raise all the beef myself that I cook with . Making it one of the most unique trucks around here. I also sell the cuts – this is how I started my business. I raise around 150 head of grass-fed, purebred Angus cows at any time. All the calves are born and raised at the same farm. We started the farm when I was young, it has been passed to me. Me and my family have been raising Angus Cattle for 20+ years. I am the herdsman – being responsible for all the daily chores, hauling them, also bailing all the hay that supports them.
I had to go through many trials and tribulations to get to this point. Multiple convicted felon. I remember many days staring at those concrete walls, thinking, “Am I ever going to make it.” Would not change it even if I had the chance. It helped build me into the strong man today necessary to run a business and operate a farm. I got the idea to expand the farm; this is when I came up with the food truck. I put a business plan together and got a business loan.
I was lost coming out of high school – got in a lot of trouble right away. A backyard fight gone wrong led to my first big case, a f2 felonious assault. This type of charge leads to mandatory prison time – and since it was a violent crime, they classified me to the maximum-security prisons. Coming home from this, I was very angry and more lost than before. This led to 10 years of hell. Was on a mission to die. Led to drug possession charges, drug trafficking, another prison run this time a minimum security, many county jail stays.
When I found myself in the County jail the last time – I had 7 years over my head, already on probation. I knew if I got one more chance, I had to take advantage of it I was running out of them. Thank god the great Judge Fraser of Union County gave me a chance at doing a treatment program and provided me with some resources to work on myself.
I now have a home, run my own business, have healthy relationships around me. My story is a great example of why you should never give up – no matter how big of a hole you may find yourself in, you can get through it, and it will make you stronger in the end. Invest in yourself. I have been clean & stayed out of trouble for 3.5 years, and I have a bright future. Am able to give back to the community, have met many new great people.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I touched on this some on the previous page – I was lost coming out of high school – got in a lot of trouble right away.
It was a very bumpy road for 10 years; the last couple have been smoother. It’s not easy running a business – you have to keep yourself healthy and motivated.
For the 10 years, I battled mental health very bad, also was in a bad financial hole. Also was always angry at the world because I wasn’t successful. Destroyed any relationship around me. If somebody had said I would be doing this 5 years ago, they would have laughed you out of the room.
As you know, we’re big fans of BCA Cuts. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
“BCA Cuts” is the name of my food truck and business that I sell frozen cuts of beef. Buckeye Country Angus is my farm name. My Dad got hurt a couple years ago when I started to get myself straight – this is when I stepped in to take the farm over.
What sets my food truck apart from others is that I raise the beef I cook with. It is top shelf – grass-fed, purebred Angus. I cook an American-style menu and have one of the best smashburger’s around. I am proud to grow my name, which all started from my family farm that has grown since I was a child. I am also proud to sell & serve top-shelf, locally-raised beef. I think people appreciate locally raised products. My family is known throughout the years for raising good cattle, humanly.
I learned social media marketing. Have done the other marketing myself, finances, business plan, most of the work myself. I have one full-time employee that works with me.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Hardworking – never giving up, no matter how bad things were around me.
I have always been an honest, stand-up guy. I think the people around me respond well to that. I’ve always been able to get along with anybody. Can develop new relationships easily.
God fearing, I put my trust in god. I’ve always stuck with my Christian religion that was taught to me young. God kept me alive many times that could have cost me my life. It gives me something positive to have in mind and sculpt my life around.
Good health- Work out, eat good. The past 3.5 years I have kept myself in good year, other stretches in the past. Being in good health now keeps my mind sharp. Makes it easy to work long hours if needed on the farm or food truck.
