Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Oliphant.
Hi Taylor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in web development, fintech, and financial services, working across a range of large institutions, and later earned my MBA from Purdue. But honestly, my heart was never really in it.
My parents were small business owners. I’ve always preferred Mom and Pop shops over their larger competitors, and I’ve always enjoyed helping them.
At some point it became hard to ignore a pretty stark imbalance: the systems, tools, and operational advantages that make large companies dominant are largely out of reach for smaller ones, and that gap has only grown as consolidation has accelerated.
AI is the first technology I’ve seen that gives smaller businesses a realistic path to closing the gap without enterprise-scale resources. That’s what led me to build AI Freelancer—not any particular fondness for AI in itself, but a genuine belief that it’s the most powerful tool available right now for leveling the playing field for SMBs.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. A lot of the work involves learning on the fly—every day brings something new, because business automation is rarely generic. The most valuable solutions are almost always highly specific to how a particular business actually operates, and the tools and possibilities available are changing constantly.
Building something useful means getting into the weeds of each client’s workflows, systems, and problems, which takes considerable effort to learn the intricacies of. There’s also the challenge of convincing small business owners to adopt new workflows when they’re already stretched thin on time and cash.
Most of what I do lives in what psychologists call Type 2 thinking—slow, effortful, working through problems consciously rather than relying on pattern recognition or habit. There’s very little I can do on autopilot. Every engagement requires me to think hard from the start, because the problems are new, the tools are new, and the combinations are always different.
But those friction points are also what make the work meaningful. If it were easy, someone bigger would already own the space.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
AI Freelancer is a full-service consulting and staffing company built specifically for small and midsize businesses. We plan, staff, build, and automate across every function a business needs: websites, HR systems, operations, marketing, training, you name it. We use AI to do it at a fraction of what a traditional agency or consulting firm would charge.
Most small businesses can’t afford the kind of end-to-end operational support that large companies take for granted. We exist to change that. Whether a client needs a new website, a hiring system, an automated workflow, or a full operational overhaul, we handle it—and we use AI at every stage to keep costs down and quality up.
What sets us apart is that we’re focused on performance, not AI. AI is a tool we use to deliver better results at lower cost—it’s not what we’re selling. We only recommend what we’re confident will actually work, not whatever is newest or trendiest. Our clients succeed because we’re honest about what moves the needle and what doesn’t. We sell real, measurable improvement—and we use AI to get there most of the time.
