Community Highlights: Meet Tammy Michael of Ann & Ivy Modern Vintage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Michael. 

Tammy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started out like most girls in the ’80s, making clothes for my Barbie Dolls and having fashion shows. I’ve always had a unique style considering I grew up in the heart of Detroit. I went to International Academy of Design and Technology (but didn’t finish). After that I shifted gears and earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication from Rochester University in Rochester Hills, Michigan, then a Master of Art in English and a Master of Art in Communication from Southern New Hampshire University. I teach full-time in Higher Ed, but my desire to be involved in the fashion industry never left me. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been easy. There are some days I absolutely want to quit. There are moments when I cannot fathom why I am putting myself through this. People never talk about the financial burden of pursuing your dream. You have to put everything on the line, including your pride. You can’t be afraid to ask for help, sales, cross promotions, whatever, because as my mom would say (She is the “Ann” in Ann & Ivy) “Closed mouths don’t get fed. So, I let my needs be known and every morning I swing my legs over the side of the bed, and I try again and will continue until this little engine purrs all on her own. 

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ann & Ivy’s Modern Vintage is a “size-inclusive – vintage inspired” Dress Shop (XS-5X) with a focus on new fashion with a nostalgic flair. “Vintage inspired” means the dresses are new and fashioned after the patterns of yesteryear. We are a small-batch boutique and carefully curated with love and attention. Quality is essential. Love is key. Fashion is timeless. 

We are the only shop in the area authorized to sell exclusive brands like Loungefly/Stitch Shop by Loungefly and Effie’s Heart. 

In addition to amazing dresses from brands like Retrolicious, Voodoo Vixen, Collectif, Miss Lulo, and Rockin’ Bettie, we carry bags and wallets, jewelry, bath and body, make-up, nostalgia gifts, stationary, and even a whole section to celebrate a Bride-to-Be! 

Once you try on a dress, you will be hooked! It’s more than a piece of clothing. It’s a lifestyle! 

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
My very first twirl skirt. I wore that skirt until it fell apart! I got in trouble at school because I wouldn’t stop spinning!
