Community Highlights: Meet Tamika Williams of Cakewalk Cake Shop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamika Williams.

Hi Tamika, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a creative at heart. My undergraduate degree is in Visual Communication Technology with a concentration in Graphic Design, so when I discovered cake decorating, it immediately captured my attention. I was drawn to the artistic side of it—the ability to transform an idea into something both beautiful and edible.

My journey began in 2012 when I decided to take a basic cake decorating class at Michael’s simply to learn a new skill. What started as curiosity quickly turned into a passion. The following year, in August 2013, I launched Cakewalk Cake Shop.

In the beginning, my focus was creating highly detailed custom cakes, particularly realistic and sculpted designs. I made cakes that looked like roasted turkeys complete with stuffing, Halloween candy buckets overflowing with treats, as well as elegant wedding cakes and baby shower cakes. I spent countless hours learning and refining techniques involving fondant, ganache, and the many varieties of buttercream and icings. Cake sculpting is one of the most challenging aspects of cake decorating, requiring both technical precision and artistic vision.

What has always made the journey worthwhile is seeing a client’s reaction when their vision comes to life. There’s something incredibly rewarding about creating a centerpiece that not only becomes the focal point of an event but also creates lasting memories for the people celebrating it

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey has never been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, especially those balancing a business, career, and family, I’ve faced my share of challenges. There were countless nights when I would get off work at 6:00 PM, start working on a cake, and not finish until 6:00 AM—only to get ready for work again and continue taking care of my child. Those were long, exhausting days, but they were necessary to build the business I envisioned.

One of the biggest challenges has been overcoming self-doubt. As an artist, you often have a vision in your mind, and when a design doesn’t come together exactly as you imagined, it can be frustrating. Creative people tend to be their own harshest critics. Even when a customer picks up a cake and absolutely loves it, I’m often thinking about what I could have done differently or how I could have made it even better. I notice every detail, every imperfection, and every opportunity for improvement.

Another challenge has been learning the business side of artistry, particularly pricing. When you pour hours of work, skill, and creativity into a custom piece, it can be difficult to determine its true value. Many artists struggle with charging what their work is worth because they’re focused on serving the client rather than recognizing the expertise and labor behind the final product. Learning to value my time, talent, and craftsmanship has been an important part of my entrepreneurial journey.

Despite the challenges, the reward comes from knowing that I’ve created something meaningful for my clients. Every late night, every difficult design, and every lesson learned has helped shape both my business and my growth as an artist.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Cakewalk Cake Shop is a luxury dessert experience company that specializes in creating memorable moments through desserts, interactive displays, and elevated event experiences. What started as a custom cake business has evolved into a brand that focuses on helping clients celebrate life’s most important occasions in a unique and beautiful way.

Today, we are known for our curated dessert tables, signature dessert cart experiences, mobile Bloom Bar, and custom dessert offerings for weddings, corporate events, baby showers, birthdays, and social celebrations. While I still appreciate the artistry of cake design, I have expanded the brand to offer interactive experiences that encourage guests to engage, create, and connect.

What sets Cakewalk apart is our commitment to creating experiences, not just desserts. Anyone can provide sweets for an event, but we focus on presentation, creativity, and thoughtful details that leave a lasting impression. Whether guests are selecting desserts from our charming dessert cart or creating custom floral bouquets at our Bloom Bar, every service is designed to be both visually stunning and memorable.

As a business owner with a background in graphic design and visual communications, branding and aesthetics have always been important to me. Every detail—from the display setup to the customer experience—is intentionally curated to reflect elegance, creativity, and quality. My goal is for every client to feel like their event is special and uniquely tailored to them.

What I am most proud of is the evolution of the Cakewalk brand. Over the years, I have grown from a self-taught cake artist working late nights after my full-time job into a business owner offering luxury event experiences throughout Northeast Ohio. That growth represents perseverance, faith, creativity, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

I want readers to know that Cakewalk Cake Shop is more than desserts—it’s about creating beautiful experiences that bring people together. We believe celebrations deserve thoughtful details, exceptional service, and memorable moments, and we are honored to be a part of some of life’s most meaningful occasions.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next five to ten years, I believe the event industry will continue moving toward personalized, interactive, and experience-driven celebrations. Consumers are no longer looking for traditional event elements simply because they’ve always been done that way. They want unique experiences that create memories, encourage guest engagement, and are worthy of sharing both in person and online.

We’re already seeing a shift away from large, elaborate displays toward curated experiences that allow guests to participate. Interactive concepts such as mobile carts, flower bars, champagne walls, custom gifting stations, and experiential activations are becoming increasingly popular because they add a personal touch while creating memorable moments for guests.

I also believe convenience and customization will become even more important. Clients want high-quality services that can be tailored to their specific vision without adding stress to the planning process. Businesses that can provide flexibility, personalization, and exceptional customer service will continue to thrive.

Technology and social media will also continue to influence trends within the industry. Clients are inspired by what they see online and are constantly looking for fresh, creative ways to make their events stand out. This will push event professionals to innovate and continually evolve their offerings.

For Cakewalk, these trends are exciting because they align with the direction we’ve already taken. By transitioning from custom cakes to mobile cart experiences and interactive event activations, we’ve positioned ourselves to meet the growing demand for experiential celebrations. I believe the future of the industry is less about products and more about creating meaningful experiences, and businesses that embrace that shift will be the ones that stand out
