Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Serda.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always knew I wanted to be a hairstylist and be involved in the beauty industry ever since I was little! I used to watch all these makeover shows and buy books about beauty so I could learn all the things. In highschool I was the one doing the braiding for sports and updos for my friends for all the dances. When I graduated highschool I enrolled in beauty school. I finished school in a year and a half and got a job right away in a salon/spa where I trained for a year before earning my own chair. I worked there for 2 years before moving on to another salon. In the beauty industry there can be so many toxic environments or people and leaving can be difficult, but I’ve left salons for that very reason. Those changes led me to where I’m at today! I never had the goal of owning my own salon, but I was tired of working under employers who didn’t appreciate their stylists. Fast forward 15 years later, here I am owning my own place that means the world to me. It wasn’t without help and motivation from friends and family! It’s felt like a dream everyday, being able to love where I work and do what I love at the same time! I opened Mila Grey The Salon in November of 2024. Another awesome stylist joined me and I still would love to grow to one more stylist and estetician where then we would be complete!
The name of my salon, Mila Grey, came from my daughter Kamila Grey. Even though she’s only 5 years old, she embodies everything I want people to feel coming into this space. Confidence, beauty, originality, and a little bit of sass. I cant wait for the next 15 years in this space!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
NO. I’ve had to leave 3 salons in 15 years because of toxic enviroments, employers, or negative changes. Honestly it was heartbreaking every time. Even beauty school was a struggle. I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about quitting many times, but knew that wasn’t the answer and I’m never one to quit something. I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else. I kept pushing forward and knew there was something greater coming out of this.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mila Grey The Salon?
We are a small Davines focused salon located in Arlington, Ohio. We do all things hair: extensions, color, cutting, waxing and also a bit of beauty services like Lash lifts and Tints. We love making our clients feel beautiful and relaxed! We constantly have people tell us how welcome they feel when walking in our doors. Someone even described it as having a fun chat with a group of friends! We only carry sustainable products like Davines for hair care and color and Bam and Boo for our skincare line. Both are made with all natural ingredients and I feel good knowing its good for us and the earth at the same time.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Stay true to yourself and don’t be afraid of change. You won’t grow if you stay in the same spot forever! Even though growth and change can be painful or scary, that’s what truly sets you apart from others. Don’t give up on yourself and trust your instincts. I wish I hadn’t worried so much about failing or what people thought of me when I started out. It can take years to build up that confidence, but when you reach that, no one can tear you down.
