Today we’d like to introduce you to Malaija Martin.
Hi Malaija, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey in the beauty industry at just 14 years old when I discovered my love and passion for hair artistry. Even at a young age, I loved how hair could completely transform someone’s confidence and make them feel beautiful. Around the age of 17, my mom moved our family to Arizona, and that transition ended up changing my life in ways I never expected.
My mom met a woman named Lisa Member and husband who owned a high-end beauty supply store in Mesa, Arizona called Sunny’s Hair & Wigs. The owner noticed how well I did my mom’s and siblings’ hair and asked if I could do hers. She loved the results so much that she offered me a position as a sales associate in her store — but I quickly became the only associate who also serviced clients. Working there exposed me to so many different women, personalities, and styles, and that’s when I truly fell in love with what I was creating through my talent.
I attended a charter school and graduated six months early in 2011 so I could focus on building my clientele and saving money for college. Although I attended college for a few years, I eventually realized my heart was always in beauty and entrepreneurship. After some time, I made the decision to fully pursue cosmetology school, and in 2017 I graduated and became an Advanced licensed cosmetologist.
After licensing, I worked in two salons over the course of about three years. When COVID happened, I decided it was time to step out on faith and officially open my own business, Diversity Hair Salon. I created my business with the belief that everyone — no matter their age, gender, or background — deserves to feel beautiful, confident, and welcomed.
Throughout my journey as a business owner, I’ve learned that success takes much more than talent. I’ve experienced incredible highs and some very difficult lows, but every challenge taught me resilience, discipline, and growth. Coming from a background where I didn’t always see examples of the life I wanted to build for myself, I’ve learned that your upbringing does not determine your future. You can accomplish anything you truly set your mind to.
Fast forward to 2026, and I’m still thriving in business, but with growth comes change. Last year brought a lot of personal and professional transformation, and I could feel myself evolving. That led to a rebrand of Malaija & Co. and a bigger vision for my future. I realized I was destined to do more than just work behind the chair — I wanted to create luxury concierge experiences by traveling to clients, hotels, events, photoshoots, bridal parties, and editorial opportunities while bringing comfort, beauty, and confidence directly to them.
I genuinely love what I do every single day, and I’m excited to continue growing, evolving, and seeing where this journey takes me next.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and I think that’s one of the biggest realities of entrepreneurship that people don’t always see behind social media or success stories. I’ve experienced a lot of challenges throughout my journey, both personally and professionally.
Starting and growing a business during and after COVID was difficult on its own. Then inflation hit, and like many small business owners, I had to learn how to adapt, restructure, and continue providing quality services while navigating rising costs. Being the first person in my family to own a business also came with its own challenges because there weren’t many people around me who truly understood what I was experiencing or could guide me through it.
Another hard lesson was realizing that not everyone will believe in your vision the way you do. Sometimes even family and friends may not fully support or understand the sacrifices, risks, and dedication it takes to build something from the ground up. That can feel isolating at times, especially when you’re trying to stay motivated and confident in yourself.
One of the biggest things I had to learn early on was boundaries. Naturally, I’m someone who genuinely loves taking care of people, but in business you have to learn how to separate emotions from operations. If you don’t, you can quickly find yourself overextending, undercharging, or constantly giving away your time and energy for free. Learning how to value my work and protect my peace was a major part of my growth as both an artist and a business owner.
I’ve also struggled with imposter syndrome and analysis paralysis — questioning whether I was good enough, wondering if I should be further along, or overthinking every next move. Entrepreneurship really forces you to confront your self-doubt while still showing up every day. Marketing, branding, consistency, finances, and simply staying mentally strong are all parts of business that people don’t always talk about enough.
But through all of those struggles, I’ve grown tremendously. Every obstacle taught me something valuable about resilience, discipline, confidence, and faith. Building a business is not easy, and it’s definitely not always smooth sailing, but those difficult seasons helped shape me into the entrepreneur and woman I am today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Malaija & Co. LLC?
My business was built on the idea that beauty services should feel personal, luxurious, and empowering. I specialize in luxury customized extension services, hair health, color, cutting and concierge-hair styling experiences designed to make clients feel confident, comfortable, and cared for from start to finish. Over the years, my brand has evolved from a traditional salon setting into something much more intentional and experience-driven.
What really sets my business apart is the level of personalization and convenience I provide. I don’t just focus on the final hairstyle — I focus on the entire experience. Whether I’m servicing a client in their home, at a hotel, for a bridal event, photoshoot, or editorial booking, I want every appointment to feel elevated, relaxing, and memorable. I’ve always believed luxury is not just about appearance, it’s about how you make people feel.
I’m also very passionate about inclusivity. When I opened Diversity Hair Salon, the name itself represented my belief that everyone deserves to feel beautiful, welcomed, and represented regardless of age, gender, or background. That message is still deeply rooted in my brand today even as I continue to evolve and rebrand into more luxury concierge and travel-based services.
One thing I’m especially proud of is my ability to continuously grow and adapt. I’ve built my business through faith, consistency, word-of-mouth, and genuine relationships with clients. Many of my clients have been with me for years because they know I truly care about not only their hair, but also their overall experience and confidence.
I also take pride in creating a safe and professional environment where clients can feel comfortable being themselves. Hair is deeply connected to identity and confidence, and I never take for granted the trust people place in me.
As my brand continues to grow, I want readers to know that this is more than just hair for me — it’s about creating an experience, helping people feel their best, and showing other women and entrepreneurs that it’s possible to build something meaningful from passion, resilience, and vision.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I also want to add that I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without God. My faith has truly carried me through every season — the uncertain beginnings, the challenges in business, and the moments where I had to rebuild, rebrand, and keep going when things felt overwhelming. There have been times where I didn’t have all the answers, but I’ve always felt guided and sustained through my faith.
At the core of everything I do, I believe my gifts come from God, and my business is not just about success, but about purpose. That perspective keeps me grounded, grateful, and committed to continuing to grow in the right direction.
More than anything, I want readers to know that my journey is still unfolding. I’m grateful for every client, every lesson, and every opportunity that has shaped me, and I’m excited for what’s still to come.
