Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Borchers.
Hi Kayla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a high school athlete I first became interested in learning about how movement and nutrition impact the human body. Specifically, how to prevent the onset of pain or injury in the first place through proactive, holistic strategies. Growing up in a rural area, this guidance was not readily available. So, I set out to study this with a goal of eventually bring these resources back to my hometown.
When studying Exercise Science as an Undergraduate at The Ohio State University, I was immediately able to use this new in-depth understanding of how exercise impacts hormone health to regulate my own menstrual cycle after experiencing amenorrhea as an athlete for years. This sparked my first interest in holistic women’s health, specifically.
After receiving my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from The Ohio State University, I worked as a Sports Medicine Physical Therapist for Ohio State. There, I saw many patients whom I wished I had seen prior to their injury to help prevent its occurrence in the first place. Women who sustained hip labral tears during childbirth as a result of birth positioning, those who returned to running postpartum with pelvic, hip or back pain, and even high school athletes who, like me, struggled with amenorrhea or urinary leakage where the root cause could not be found in traditional medicine.
These experiences led me to launch my own Holistic Physical Therapy and Wellness Private Practice, where I now see clients Virtually world-wide and in-person back in my hometown area of Russia, Ohio.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Currently, I am in a season of transition where the once smooth road has experienced many bumps lately. One such bump being a pregnancy bump!
After building my private practice in Columbus, Ohio, to a thriving caseload of dream patients, I had to press pause with the birth of my third child. While this pregnancy was 100% planned, an entrepreneur is never fully prepared for what stepping away from her business for a period of time looks like. For me, this was really hard. I had ideas and ways I wanted to pour into my patients, but knew I had to take time to pour into my own healing and support of my own family unit. I shifted into a season of being a full-time stay at home mom with my newborn and his older siblings (ages 2 and 4). This was such a special time in our family life and I am so grateful I stepped away from my business for nearly 20 weeks. During this time, my husband and I sold our home in Columbus, Ohio and moved our family to our hometown. We transitioned our family into the quaint community we both were raised in, and with that move I returned to limited work hours post-maternity leave.
I am now resuming 1:1 patient care post-move and maternity leave. My business has pivoted to Virtual Appointments and Online Programming available worldwide, with In-home care available for those in West-Central Ohio.
So while a much desired and anticipated struggle, I think the work / life balance of a mother and business owner is not talked about enough! I have a desire to grow my family, and my business. My family will always come first, and I know that may be at the expense of my small business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My Holistic Physical Therapy and Wellness Private Practice exists to help patients find the root-cause of their orthopedic and pelvic health concerns. I specialize in treating active women before, during and after pregnancy who are either experiencing active pain / leakage, or who desire to prevent the onset of these symptoms in the first place. My patients are primarily health-conscious women who seek a more holistic, natural approach to care – while at the same time not discounting modern medicine’s role when needed.
I provide 1:1 Orthopedic and Pelvic Health Physical Therapy Evaluation and Treatment, both Virtually and In-Home. By seeing my patients in their own surroundings, I am able to optimally help them address their concerns in the comfort of their home. With many clients being busy moms, having the option for Virtual Care allows appointment scheduling with ease while a child is napping or playing right alongside mom. With a holistic approach, we delve into movement, stress reduction, nourishment, breath work and comprehensive myofascial release techniques to achieve my client’s goals.
On the journey into and through my third pregnancy, I created Online Programs specific to Preconception, Pregnancy and Postpartum. My goal is to support the overwhelmed, busy mama who wants to proactively support her body in these life seasons, but does not have the time for additional scheduled appointments. With these curated programs, she can move through the exercise, breath work, nutrition and education information specific to these perinatal life seasons as she needs them. With lifetime access, these is no better way to support full body health for mothers and those on their journey to becoming one.
I am grateful to provide these services to women that I wish I had going all the way back to High School. Serving as a resource for women on their journey into and through motherhood truly lights me up. No matter what season you find yourself in, it is never too late (or too early!) to address orthopedic and pelvic health pain points. Being able to use my own experience as an active, holistic-leaning mother of three helps me better relate to my patients and truly understand the time crunch they are under when implementing rehab routines from home.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My faith and family matter the most to me. Having a strong faith life was ingrained in me as a young child, and it brings me such joy to pass this along to my children. My prayer life was pivotal in making the decision to start my own private practice and move away from the confines of traditional medicine. I had to get really quiet, and listen to God’s plans for my life (even if that felt really scary to take the leap!). With this time of prayer and reflection, I soon felt so much peace surrounding my decision. Now in a time of transition with our move and my recent maternity leave, I have had to come back to this why. To remind myself what matters most – my faith and family – and that everything else will fall into place as it is meant to.
