Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Johnson.
Hi Justin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my career in graphic design, videography, and marketing, which later led me into UX design. About five years ago, I co-founded a software development agency, where I honed my skills in building businesses and delivering creative solutions.
Nathan and I have been lifelong friends, so when I was preparing to exit the software company, it was natural that our conversations turned to what was next. He began sharing his journey of transitioning from the corporate world into real estate, first as a realtor and then as a consultant. Hearing how many homeowners he had already been able to help—and his vision to do even more—really struck me.
Those conversations sparked the idea of combining our skill sets: his deep real estate experience and my background in building and scaling businesses. What started as a shared vision quickly turned into a mission. That’s how Defender Homeowner Advocates was born—a way to transform a benevolent effort into a legitimate business that empowers homeowners and makes a real impact.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been both smooth and bumpy at the same time. In many ways, our journey has felt organic—Nathan and I share a similar worldview, we know each other deeply, and we’re in the same season of life. That foundation has made it easier to handle the inevitable “big boulders” of building a business, because we can communicate openly and trust one another through the process.
Of course, entrepreneurship always brings its challenges. We’ve had to navigate a rapidly changing landscape—shifts in the economy, political climate, and the rise of artificial intelligence are reshaping industries at a pace we’ve never seen before. Those changes bring both uncertainty and opportunity, which keeps us on our toes.
So while I wouldn’t call it a smooth road, I would say it’s been a worthwhile one—fun to navigate when you’ve got the right partner by your side.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Defender Homeowner Advocates?
Defender Homeowner Advocates exists to stand in the gap for people facing some of the most difficult seasons of their lives. We specialize in helping homeowners who are at risk of losing their homes or who feel overwhelmed by a system that often doesn’t give them clear answers or options. Our role is to guide, educate, and advocate—so families don’t have to navigate those challenges alone.
What makes us different is the way we approach those situations. Our focus is on people first—listening, understanding, and helping families find solutions that truly serve their best interests. Sometimes that means helping them stay in their home, and other times it means walking with them through a transition in the best way possible.
What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is the impact we’ve been able to make on real families—people who, before finding us, often felt like they had no one to turn to. Being able to offer clarity, compassion, and support during such a stressful and scary time is what drives our entire team.
At its core, Defender isn’t just a business—it’s a mission. And our hope is that more people come to know there is someone ready to advocate for them when they need it most.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
At the end of the day, what drives us is simple: people. Every homeowner we meet has a story, and our greatest honor is being invited into that story during a difficult chapter. We don’t take that lightly.
If there’s one thing we’d want readers to know, it’s that you’re not alone. Whether you’re a homeowner facing foreclosure, navigating an inherited probate property, going through a relocation or divorce, or dealing with any other real estate challenge—we’re here to listen first. Our work is about creating hope and clarity where it often feels like neither exists.
And beyond the business side, we’re just two friends who believe that helping people through life’s transitions is one of the most meaningful things we could ever dedicate our lives to.
