Community Highlights: Meet Jean Dugger of Jeanius Motivation and Coaching LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean Dugger.

Hi Jean, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story didn’t start on a stage; it started with a leap of faith. I had just lost my job in telecommunications and was attending a bariatric support meeting. Because I was a patient myself, I knew the procedures inside and out. The office manager noticed how I communicated with the other patients and, knowing I was looking for work, offered me a job on the spot. It was a massive pay cut compared to my old career, and I honestly thought it would be temporary—just a way to keep busy while I looked for something else.

I started on day one doing medical records and filing. But the practice was growing, and a surgeon named Dr. Clarey quickly noticed my drive to get things done. She “grabbed me up” and moved me into surgery scheduling, then medical assisting. Before I knew it, I was traveling with her to national bariatric conventions.

That was the turning point. Dr. Clarey realized I had a unique perspective: the knowledge of a patient combined with the grit of a dedicated employee. She put me in charge of support groups, where I found an immediate, deep connection to the patients. But she didn’t stop there. She pushed me out of my comfort zone and onto the stage, having me speak in front of rooms full of clinicians and medical CEOs.

Dr. Clarey wasn’t always easy to work with—she had a legendary temper. But over the next decade, we learned how to communicate and navigate that fire together. I became the face of her bariatric program and worked with incredible people who are still in my life today. Her stern behavior and the high-pressure medical experience I gained in her presence forged the leader I am now.

I eventually left the practice to pursue a new path, and shortly after, I learned she had been diagnosed with cancer. I carried a lot of guilt for not being there during her roughest time, but we stayed in touch. Then came the call that changed everything. Two nights before she passed away, she called me at my office. She told me, “Jean, I am going on. But your life is still here… I called to tell you that you will always land on your feet. I am blessed to have had you in my life.” To hear a woman of her stature—someone who had challenged me and shaped me for ten years—say she was blessed by me was overwhelming. She told me to keep helping people and keep spreading the word. When she passed, I stepped back for a few years because the grief was heavy, but her words never left me. I finally realized that “landing on my feet” wasn’t just a promise; it was a mission.

But Dr. Clarey’s words were prophetic. Even when I tried to just “blend in,” every door I walked through ended in leadership. Every path I took ended with me in front of a room. No matter the obstacle, I always landed on my feet—just as she said. Those words played silently in my head for years: “I will always land on my feet.” Eventually, I had to stop asking what it meant and start living it.

The real motivational speaking shift happened right before COVID. I was working in a surgical community when the Program Director noticed my ability to shift the energy of a room. It was at a meeting that would provide us with a new partnership for surgeries. We did not know what was going to happen during that meeting, but I did what I always do; went in and spoke to people, looked them eye to eye; and told them kindly what we wanted. After that meeting, she came to me with stars in her eyes like-“you controlled that room!”, “You belong in front of people. You lift us up.” She literally moved my office to the front of our surgery center of the building so every staff member would have to encounter my energy every day. That is also where I started to coach people that would walk in my office and share their dreams with me, and want inspiration for their day.

Once COVID hit- the world shut down. I remember thinking, “REALLY–right now when I am trying to change my life and do something I love for others?!” I thought it was too late but–once I heard the world renowned Les Brown say his famous line, “you’ve got genius in you!”–I thought–I DO! I literally do and then that was the moment I finally embraced my “Jeanius”—spelled J-E-A-N-I-U-S. I realized my mission was to ensure no one feels alone in their dream. Today, I am a “stick-builder.” Like many entrepreneurs, I am building a massive tower one resource and one “stick” at a time. I still work full-time in a demanding role as a Practice Manager at Eastway Behavioral Healthcare, and I’m a proud mother of seven talented kids, grandmother of four phenomenal sour patch grandkids and got one little doggie that keeps me laughing.

My business, Jeanius Motivation and Coaching LLC, is the culmination of all those sticks I’ve collected. I’ve taken the words from my motivational speaking into helping others with adding transformational coaching, hypnotherapy, professional emcee services and even wedding officiating because I love to see people share love and good times. I make mistakes like anyone else, but I’ve learned to let the obstacles flow past me like water in a river. I’m exactly where I need to be—landing on my feet, and helping others learn how to land on theirs, too.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been anything but a smooth road. My journey has been about finding the strength to keep building while the wind was trying to blow my “sticks” down.

The struggles started early. I lost two of my sisters when I was younger, just as I was starting to have my own children and build a life for myself. But the most shattering blow came at the end of 2015. I lost my mother, and then, just a couple of weeks later, I lost my father. Losing both parents in such a short window felt like the world had gone dark.

In that grief, I realized I had spent so much of my life living for everyone else that I hadn’t yet truly lived for myself. My parents were wonderful people who poured themselves into others—family, church, and neighbors—but they often left very little time for themselves. I realized I shared their core mission of transformation, but I had to do it my way.

Before she passed, my mother told me, ‘Make your own traditions.’ For someone rooted in a family that always did things the same way, those words were my permission slip. They freed me from the box I had been in. My business was born from that darkness—the realization that life is short and I finally needed to listen to my own voice and ‘start my JEANIUS.’ It’s not just a project for me; it’s a lifeline for others who feel stuck in that same place.

Navigating my professional life after the passing of my mentor, Dr. Clarey, was another uphill battle. When she was here, doors opened easily; once she was gone, I had to learn how to kick those doors down myself. For years, I also battled the guilt of “stolen time”—the feeling that every hour I spent on my business was an hour I was robbing from my seven children. It took a long time to realize that by pursuing my purpose, I wasn’t taking from them; I was modeling for them. I was showing my kids that they have permission to be exactly who they are.

Perhaps the most persistent hurdle has been the “paper” barrier. In the corporate world, I often find myself in rooms where I am the only leader without a traditional four-year degree. I’ve been overlooked because I don’t have the “right” credentials on paper. But what I lack in a degree, I make up for in pure, unteachable experience. My struggles have been my textbooks. My life has been my university. When I walk into a room today, I stick my chest out because I know what I know. I am a great leader because I’ve been in the mud; I didn’t just look up how to solve problems on the internet—I lived through them. I tell people all the time: you don’t have to figure out the whole problem today; you just have to pull the first thread. I am a “stick-builder” because that is how I survived. I picked up one stick, then another, and I kept going until I had a tower. I want to represent those who are overlooked because they don’t have a piece of paper, but who have the heart, the determination, and the “Jeanius” to lead better than anyone else in the room.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Jeanius Motivation and Coaching LLC is more than a consulting firm; it is a movement dedicated to the “audacity of being yourself.” My business is built on the belief that we all have a “Jeanius” within us—a unique set of gifts that often get buried under the weight of life’s struggles or the lack of a formal degree.

What I Do & My Specializations
My work is divided into three powerful pillars:

I don’t just “speak”—I bring the house down. My specialty is taking a room full of people who feel disconnected and weaving them together into a unified team. Whether I’m in a school, a medical office, or a corporate venue, I don’t “speak at” my audience; I pull them in. My events are high-energy, very funny, and deeply interactive. I have a unique ability to get the shyest or most standoffish person in the room involved and laughing. I don’t do deadpan; I do transformation. By sharing the raw truth of my journey—coming into the medical community with zero training and earning respect through grit—I show everyone in the room that they have the same “Jeanius” potential within them.

Transformational Coaching & Hypnotherapy: I work one-on-one with clients who are ready for change but are stuck in the “how.” I provide a clear roadmap. Using my experience and hypnotherapy, I help people break through barriers like weight loss, smoking cessation, or the “imposter syndrome” that holds them back from their dreams. My clients flourish fast because we don’t just talk about the problem—we pull the first thread and start building.

Celebration Services (MC & Officiating): I am a wedding officiant and professional MC. I love being at the starting line of a couple’s life together, reminding them that while obstacles are coming, they will land on their feet if they hold on to each other. As an MC, I’m the spark plug. I specialize in getting diverse groups of people to realize they have more in common than they think, lighting up the room so they can truly enjoy the moment.

What Sets Me Apart
What sets me apart is my 150% commitment to the reaction, not just the action. I’m not interested in being a “shiny piece of candy” that looks good on a flyer; I want to be the catalyst that changes the atmosphere of a business or a person’s life. I bring 25 years of marriage, seven children, and two decades of medical leadership to the table. I’m not teaching from a textbook; I’m teaching from the “mud” I’ve walked through.

What I’m Most Proud Of
Brand-wise, I am most proud of the feeling people have when they walk away from me. Whether it’s a corporate team that finally feels like a unit, a coaching client who just found their confidence, or a wedding guest who had the time of their life—my brand is defined by connection. I want readers to know that if they feel like they are “just existing,” I am here to help them find their fire. You don’t need a fancy diploma to build a big tower; you just need the audacity to pick up the first stick.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next decade, I see the personal development industry shifting toward Total Community Wellness. People are no longer looking for just a speech; they are looking for a space where they can grow professionally, emotionally, and be supported physically. The trend is moving toward “socially conscious” business models—businesses that don’t just take profit, but actively pour back into the neighborhood.

My Vision: Pinnacle Motivation by Jeanius
My ultimate goal over the next 5 to 10 years is to establish a physical location that serves as a versatile Community Empowerment Venue called Pinnacle Motivation by Jeanius. This won’t be just an office; it will be a hub for transformation.

The Partnership Opportunity:
I am a “stick-builder” at heart, and I know that every great tower is built with the right resources. I am currently looking for the right partner, investor, or visionary—a “Shark” with an available building or the capital to invest—who wants to own a space that truly breathes life into the community. My venue won’t be like any other; it will be centered entirely around growth and new beginnings. I have the drive, the brand, and the voice to pack a building to capacity, and I am looking for someone who wants to own the foundation while I build the empire on top of it, with a goal toward eventual ownership.

A Space for Everyone: Pinnacle Motivation will be a premier event space available for rent, allowing other entrepreneurs, creatives, and local leaders to have a professional stage to host their own classes, workshops, and celebrations. I want to remove the barriers for others who are also trying to “stick-build” their dreams.

Giving Back (The Heart of the Brand): I’ve always looked for a way to give back to the world that has given me so much, and this space will finally make that possible. A dedicated part of the building will house a Community Food Pantry. I want to ensure that while we are feeding people’s minds and spirits in the front of the house, we are literally helping feed their families in the back.

Incentivized Empowerment: To keep the cycle of giving going, I plan to offer rental discounts for the venue to those who contribute to the pantry or participate in our community outreach programs.
The future of this industry is about more than just ‘success’—it’s about significance. I believe the trend will move toward businesses that act as both safety nets and springboards for their communities. I still have a lot to say, and I want Pinnacle Motivation by Jeanius to be the place where the whole community can come to be heard, be fed, and be empowered.

Because at the end of the day, being JEANIUS means being:

Joyus people with

Extraordinary lives that are

Always overcoming and

Never giving up

Inspiring others to be

Unafraid to

Share their story!!!

The future is bright, and believe me—it’s going to be Jeanius.”
