Today we’d like to introduce you to Idayat Sambo.
Hi Idayat, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
5 years ago, I took a trip to the store to get an outfit for a special occasion, I had already pictured a color block maxi skirt paired with a nice long sleeve shirt. It was during summer so the store I went to have a lot of fun color options to choose from. As I walked into the store, I spotted a beautiful bright colored, circle Maxi skirt; I was so excited. As a got to the rack a grabbed the skirt and the fabric was perfect. Lightweight and soft, just as I imagined. I tried it on to check the fit, then got the biggest disappointment. I found a long slit that ran from the floor to the upper thigh. As a modest Muslim woman, it has always been a chore to find clothing that was modest enough for me. A lot of times just like this day I ended up not going to the occasion. That same night out of frustration I decided since I couldn’t find what I could wear I’ll start making them myself. As I started getting my social life back from making modest clothing myself people would ask me, where did you get that? Well, I made it, can you make me one? This is How Covermecutee started!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Entrepreneurship has never been smooth for me, I had a lot of problems with sewing different fabrics, machine breaking down, creating designs no one wanted, and the biggest part financial support to keep the business growing. Even as a have concurred most of these setbacks the most painful one now is explaining myself to people of how much MODEST FASHION for Muslims is highly needed and there is a big market for it. Islam being the fastest growing Religion in the US, it can only get better. To add to that, the anxiety from being the only women with a hijab on in rooms full of entrepreneurs and investors is a daily struggle. However, I love what I do, the people I represent and serve. That’s what keeps me going
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
It’s funny that I now own a fashion Brand because while growing up, I used to get bullied for showing up! They will always tell me I just wanted to be noticed but the fact was that I could not go unnoticed, I was not even trying. I have always love looking good and being comfortable. As a Nigerian, our culture encourages bright colors and looking great at all times. My grandma would also make sure I looked good.
