Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Jensen.

Heidi Jensen

Hi Heidi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hello, I am a passionate designer and owner of Heidi Jensen Interiors. I have always been fascinated with design from a very young age. Growing up in the Midwest, my father was an entrepreneur and had his own manufacturing company making automotive parts for the “big 3” back in the days when the motor city was humming! He also had a real estate portfolio, and I remember loving the smell of new construction and sawdust as a kid walking through new buildings in the early building phases. I remember my parents letting me redecorate my bedroom as a child. We loved flying and traveling, so I opted for clouds on my walls and kites hanging from the ceiling. Looking back, I remodeled many of the homes that I lived in, from Phoenix, AZ, to Kalamazoo, MI. My background was in medical and pharmaceutical sales which is what brought me to Columbus, OH. I met my husband while we both worked at Abbott Laboratories, and he was currently living in Columbus. We got married and adopted our son from Guatemala. At that time, I decided to take a break from my career to be with our son, and in 2017, I was given an incredible opportunity to complete my first flip home, and I haven’t stopped since. I draw inspiration for my design from the many places I have both lived and traveled and the many connections with friends I have made along the way. I have been blessed to be able to explore new horizons through design. I find my passion in helping to bring the many pieces of one’s vision to life. I enjoy collaborating with others and ensuring every detail is attended to. To me, design is like a puzzle- every detail and piece adds to the overall beauty of the finished project. Whether you are flipping a home, remodeling a bathroom or simply just need inspiration to complete a room, I can help my clients. I believe that beautiful interiors transform your daily life and who doesn’t want a beautiful life?

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Working with the same contractor has been wonderful. However, I pride myself that I can work with anyone. At times when a client has their own contractor, things need to be discussed prior to the beginning of a project in detail. I have learned to make no assumptions in this business, as everyone can have a different perspective or thoughts on the creative process. In construction, you prepare as best you can, but there are always surprises, especially when you are doing a full remodel. You don’t always know what is behind that wall under you bring out the hammer. LOL

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Heidi Jensen Interiors, LLC wears many hats. I specialize in interior design help, ranging from paint consultations for interior and exterior colors to full remodels to flip homes. I have had the opportunity to work on some very old and dilapidated homes and completely bring life back into them. My most memorable project was in Bexley, where the city of Columbus had custody of the home as it was considered a hoarder home and was in serious need of repair. It was a complete eyesore to the community, and it was located in a beautiful neighborhood, so the community was invested in wanting to see this home repaired and restored. The contractor who purchased the property was also highly invested because he lived in this neighborhood. It was definitely a “rags to riches” type story. We kept the existing house but added on a 3-car garage and master bedroom suite above the garage. The home looks completely different, and it was so exciting to see the final project sold for over $600,000 to a wonderful couple. The transformation of this home was absolutely awesome! When I take on a project, I treat it as if it were my home, and I have high expectations, so I pride myself on delivering more than expected by paying attention to every detail. In design, it is the details that set you apart! When I am not working on a design project, you can find me drinking a glass of Malbec (my fave) on the tennis courts or planning my next vacation adventure!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice would be to network and make contacts in the field in which you choose. There are so many designers and contractors, but there is always plenty of work for everyone. Find what works with your business model and your work ethic, build from there, and choose to work with those that have strong experience in the areas where you may not be. It takes a team to create a beautiful remodel or home. Find a great and reliable plumber and electrician because you will definitely need them. Establish a relationship with your local Sherwin-Williams store. I absolutely love the guys at the Lewis Center store location! They are amazing and refer clients to me for paint consultations. Work together to find your network and help each other grow.
