Community Highlights: Meet Amy Everhart of Well Balanced Women

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Everhart

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My nursing background was mostly critical care. I was an ICU nurse all through the pandemic as well while I was finishing grad school. I have always had a passion for mental health and felt the best way to be able to pursue more of that field was to obtain my psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner degree. After I graduated, I worked at an outpatient private practice where I saw patients with a wide range of diagnoses. It was there that I started to realize I felt most connected to the women and decided I wanted to start my own practice where I specialized in Reproductive Psychiatry. This refers to women across the reproductive lifespan, from preconception to pregnancy, postpartum, and through the perimenopausal transition. I have three children myself and have experienced my own mental health challenges during the postpartum (and beyond) periods. I felt called to become the provider I always needed along my motherhood journey. Since then, I have been able to support so many women who are struggling which has been a true privilege. I have also brought on two additional nurse practitioners to be able to expand my reach to women across the state of Ohio. My psychiatric practice is called Well Balanced Women. We can see women anywhere in the state of Ohio virtually and have an office space in Westerville, Ohio for in person visits.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. It has required a lot of hard work, late nights, early mornings, and getting outside of my comfort zone on a daily basis. The easy part is seeing my patients because that is what I am best at. The harder parts have been the business aspect of creating a private practice. I have no background in business so I have had to figure everything out from scratch. While it has been challenging, it has also been fun and worth it. Surprisingly, I have enjoyed the business side of it much more then I expected I would. I never thought I would be an entrepreneur but now that I am one, I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life. I know there will always be difficulties that come up but over time I have grown in my self confidence that I can handle whatever it might be.

As you know, we’re big fans of Well Balanced Women. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Well Balanced Women is a psychiatric practice catering to women’s mental health. We are a group of three psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners who have our own lived experiences that allow us to connect to patients in ways other providers might not be able to. We see women ages 18 and up across the state of Ohio. We accept a handful of major insurances : Aetna, Anthem BCBS, Cigna, Optum, and United Healthcare. We take pride in delivering top quality psychiatric care. We are on a mission to break the stigma around mental health care for women. We ensure our patients feel seen and heard. We are on their journey with them and value the therapeutic relationship. We are down to earth and truly love what we do here. The practice is known for providing psychiatric medication management with integrative treatment options as well as brief psychotherapy inside of medication management sessions. We are constantly learning and growing to be able to provide women with the personalized tailored care they deserve.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe risk taking in business is absolutely necessary to be successful. The more you flex that muscle the easier it becomes. It also requires taking risks in order to be able to know what might work for business growth and what might not. The biggest risk I took was leaving the job at the other outpatient practice to go into mine full time. There was no guarantee that patients would come see me or that I could actually make my own practice work. However, I was determined to be successful. Other risks I have taken are reaching out to network with others, being vulnerable on social media, and hiring not only my office manager but two other nurse practitioners which was another big risk I took so far. I believe there needs to be times when less risk is being taken and other times when more risks are being taken. I always felt that worse case scenario I would go back working for someone else. I am happy to report I do not think that is something I will have to do because I have been willing to do the hard things necessary such as taking the right risks at the right times.
