Check Out The Average AF Podcast’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Average AF Podcast.

Hi Average AF, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Like every other podcast, we have changed quite a bit from the beginning. Three years ago, the podcast actually started as a hip-hop album review show. The plan was to discuss fun topics for the first half hour but then always end the show with an in-depth review of an album. That quickly changed after a few months because it was hard to do all of the research we wanted to while being parents and working constantly. We slowly started integrating guests and having open-minded discussions about literally anything and everything, including those on the serious and sometimes more sensitive side of things. Our close friends have always had an interesting view of how the world operates while keeping an optimistic mindset at the same time, making those debates extremely intriguing.

Somewhere along the line, we realized our audience was gravitating more to the comedy and off-the-wall topics that came natural to us, so we steered more into that direction. Now, we are a fast-paced comedy show that intentionally stirs the pot purely for the sake of entertainment. We’ve evolved massively over the years, both personally and professionally, but we are really starting to hit our stride. We’ve recently partnered with one of the biggest podcast networks in the entire state of Ohio as well, The Off The Tongue Podcast Network (@offthetonguenetwork), so things can only go up from here!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are quite a few obstacles that people don’t think about when it comes to podcasting. Aside from the obvious like learning audio/video production, quality control, equipment, and things like that, the most difficult thing for us is to come up with new intriguing ways to promote the show. When you’ve been doing a show for nearly three years and try to post on social media every day, it’s hard to make sure the posts don’t become repetitive or something easy to scroll right by, so we always have to be in tune with how other shows are doing it to take inspiration from.

Outside of the social media aspect, you have to take the business model of podcasting into consideration as well. Generally speaking, many people don’t take into account that every single piece of content we put out is 100% free. We were definitely aware of this when starting the podcast, but the overall structure of the business can be a slow grind, even with Patreon, merch, and advertising options. Continuing to put out entertaining content that people enjoy is our main priority, and we’re grateful for anything additional that comes our way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a podcast that is made up of wild energy, outrageous takes, and looking at the world through a different lens. The entire purpose of the show is to make people laugh and be entertained while they are doing everyday things like working, driving, or winding down after a long day. It has been known that anyone that tunes into our show will have a new favorite podcast within one or two episodes, and that’s a guarantee. Feel free to test this theory out for yourself… Prove us wrong if you dare (Haha!). We do honestly think that’s what separates us from the rest, though – There is never a dull moment. That, on top of our overall production being the same level (or higher) as the most popular shows in the world, gives us the confidence and motivation to keep grinding and be consistent. We always find a way to put an episode out every single week while balancing parenting, working full-time jobs, and other family obligations.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to us is extremely simple – It just comes down to how much fun we have when we record each episode. After we wrap up, you’ll often hear one of us saying, “That was crazy,” or “We went wiiiiild on that one!” Adding sponsors, Patreon members, gaining subscribers, and selling merch are all great things too, but it really comes down to our passion for sharing our highly energetic content with the world. With no indication of us slowing down any time soon, we’re going to continue to grow our audience and provide an escape for those who listen.
