Check Out Shannon Housley’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Housley.

Shannon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Before founding Housley Institute, I built my career in the corporate world as a marketing campaign strategist and financial copywriter, helping companies craft messaging that truly connected with people. While I enjoyed the creative side of marketing, I eventually found myself wanting something more personal, hands-on, and impactful.

My journey into this industry began with microblading — what I jokingly call the “gateway drug” of permanent makeup — because so many artists, myself included, start there. Once I learned brows, it opened the door to an entirely new world of artistry, confidence-building, and transformation. Like many people in this industry, I went down the “Google rabbit hole” researching what else was possible within permanent makeup, and that’s when I discovered paramedical tattooing and 3D areola restoration.

The emotional impact of that work immediately resonated with me. Helping breast cancer survivors and reconstructive surgery patients regain a sense of wholeness gave the work a much deeper purpose, and I knew I wanted it to become a core part of my career. From there, I continued expanding my training and services to include powder brows, lip blush, permanent eyeliner, and scar camouflage.

Now in our eighth year, Housley Institute has grown into an award-winning cosmetic and paramedical tattoo studio serving patients and clients throughout the tri-state region, from Dayton, Ohio to Lexington, Kentucky. We work closely with plastic surgeons, breast surgeons, dermatologists, and other medical professionals to help support patients through their healing and confidence-restoration journeys.

Today, our team includes two estheticians and three permanent makeup and paramedical tattoo artists, all focused on combining artistry, education, and compassionate care. My background in branding and communication still plays a large role in how I approach the business, but at the heart of everything we do is a commitment to ethical education, meaningful patient care, and creating work that truly makes a difference in people’s lives.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey definitely wasn’t completely smooth. One of the biggest things I realized early on was that becoming a permanent makeup artist also meant becoming an entrepreneur — and those are two very different skill sets. Learning the artistry was only one piece of it. Suddenly, I was also responsible for building a business, marketing the brand, creating systems, managing operations, leading a team, and wearing every hat imaginable as a small business owner.

I think a lot of artists enter this industry believing they’re simply pursuing a creative career, but the reality is that you’re also becoming the marketer, the scheduler, the customer service department, the strategist, the trainer, and the problem solver all at once. That’s probably been the most challenging part of the journey for me.

As the business grew, I also had to learn how to lead a team and navigate the challenges that come with growth. While my background in marketing and financial copywriting definitely gave me an advantage when it came to branding and communication, entrepreneurship still required constant adaptability, resilience, and learning through experience.

People often see an established business and assume it happened quickly, but what they don’t see are the years of figuring things out behind the scenes — the long hours, the pivots, the mistakes, and the persistence it takes to continue showing up even when things feel overwhelming.

At the end of the day, though, those challenges helped shape who we are today. They helped me build a business rooted not only in artistry, but also in education, ethics, compassion, and creating a genuinely supportive environment for both clients and students.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in both cosmetic and paramedical tattooing, which means my work ranges from permanent makeup services like brows, lip blush, and eyeliner to restorative procedures such as 3D areola tattooing and scar camouflage. While I love the artistic side of cosmetic tattooing, the paramedical side of this industry has truly become my passion because of the emotional impact it has on patients.

A large part of our work involves helping breast cancer survivors and reconstruction patients complete their healing journey through realistic 3D areola tattooing. We also work with individuals who have scars from surgeries, injuries, or trauma and help restore confidence through scar camouflage techniques. What makes this work so meaningful is that it goes far beyond aesthetics. Many patients tell us they finally feel whole again, or that they feel comfortable looking at themselves in the mirror for the first time in years. Those moments stay with you.

Over the years, we’ve built strong relationships with plastic surgeons, breast surgeons, dermatologists, and medical professionals throughout the tri-state region, and we’re trusted to care for many of their patients. That level of trust is something I’m incredibly proud of.

I’m also deeply passionate about education. In addition to working with clients and patients, I teach other artists who want to enter the paramedical tattooing field. One thing that sets us apart is that we strongly believe this type of work should be taught hands-on and ethically. This is not something I believe can truly be mastered through quick online certifications or rushed weekend courses. Our training focuses heavily on real-world readiness, patient care, safety, communication, and supervised practice because these patients deserve providers who are properly prepared.

What I’m most proud of is that we’ve been able to create a business that combines artistry with genuine purpose. We’re not just helping people look different — we’re helping many of them feel emotionally restored and more confident after some of the hardest experiences of their lives. That’s something I never take lightly.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think one of the qualities that has contributed most to my success is that I genuinely care — probably to a fault sometimes. I care deeply about the people we serve, the quality of the work we put out, the education we provide, and the reputation we build. I’ve never been someone who could take shortcuts just for the sake of growth or profit if it meant sacrificing quality or integrity.

I’m also incredibly persistent. I don’t give up easily, and I’m willing to continue learning, adapting, and evolving when something isn’t working. Entrepreneurship requires a lot of resilience because there are constantly new challenges, especially when you’re building something from the ground up. You have to be willing to pivot, solve problems, and continue showing up even on difficult days.

Another thing that has shaped my success is that I’ve always approached this industry from both a creative and strategic perspective. My background in marketing taught me how important communication, branding, and trust are, but my artistic side taught me the value of empathy and connection. I think combining those two mindsets has helped me create a business that feels both professional and deeply personal.

Most importantly, though, I’ve never lost sight of the fact that behind every procedure is a real human being. Whether it’s a client coming in for brows or a breast cancer survivor completing reconstruction, I’ve always believed people deserve honesty, compassion, and work that’s done with intention and care. I think that philosophy has ultimately become the foundation of everything we do.
