Check Out Sarah Kay’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Kay.

Hi Sarah , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I knew I wanted to be on the radio in high school. I loved listening to morning radio and it just clicked one day- that is what I should do! I went to Kent State University and got a degree in Radio Broadcast Journalism and quickly realized news was not for me. I wanted to chat, not report. I worked in Canton at Mix 94.1 for four years out of college and then found myself at Rubber City Radio Group working part time for 97.5 WONE and 94.9 WQMX doing weekends, overnights and fill-ins.

I worked my up to full-time nights, then mornings and now I am the Program Director. I just celebrated 10 years on the morning show with my co-host Scott Wynn, making us WQMX’s longest running Morning Show Duo and this is my 17th year at the station. WQMX prides itself on being live and local and super-serving its listeners and the community through supporting local charities. I never imagined my dream of wanting to chat on the radio would lead to being so fulfilling in helping so many local people in our community.

My work at WQMX lead me to work with Bosom Buddies, WQMX’s charity with Cleveland Clinic Akron General, which provides FREE mammograms to those in our community who can’t afford them. To date, we have helped raised well over $1.4 million dollars and provided over 56,000 free life-saving mammograms and counting.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, I have been blessed to work at a live and local company here at Rubber City Radio for Thom Mandel. He believes in local radio and live personalities. I have only worked at two stations. The other let me go and I was completely blindsided, and that’s radio. Management makes a change and you are out, but in my case it was my blessing in disguise. At WQMX, I have thrived at being my authentic self.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Radio On-Air Personality
Professional Emcee at local festivals, clubs, and charity events
Through my work at the station, we have helped raise millions of dollars for local charities in northeast Ohio

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My dad collects 45s and has a he used to play them for me and my sister. If we didn’t like a particular song, we would yell- CUT! Laughter would follow and dad would put on another record and I can remember thinking I never wanted him to stop! I believe this is where my love of all kinds of music came from because he played all kinds of genres for us!!
