Today we’d like to introduce you to Prince Ish.
Hi Prince, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been creative growing up as a kid in East Cleveland, but I lacked patience. I would create comic books in classes when I was supposed to be doing math. Eventually that led me to playing a video game called “street fighter 3rd strike” in high school with one of my brothers and a song from Childish Gambino started playing. The year was 2011. I paused the game and went to my room and started writing lyrics. Which I didn’t know how to do, but I always follow my instincts. Which led me to grow and improve my skills from my obsession. I then began performing all over Cleveland. At venues such as House of Blues, Grog Shop, Peabodys (when they were open) and so many more. I also began to travel out of state and perform as well. Immersing myself in the music scene as a young teenager, and that raised me and taught me how to be disciplined as a man. Over the years my instincts has led my sound to constantly evolve and share insight that I discover and communicate to my community and beyond.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This has not been smooth at all haha. Since I learn from teaching myself and gaining hands on experience then distilling information in a way that I can embody it. Has its moments of frustration. Along with me being an introvert at heart. I would say one of the frustrating/Challenging moments to me was developing my voice. I don’t mean sonically, but the intent and purpose behind who I am. I can create music and it can be catchy or say something cool and get attention from that, but as I matured I began to understand that my voice truly matters especially in spaces such as Hip Hop that are flooded with egotistical facades. Everyone that my voice is heard. There must be an intent, and it’s easy to fall to the pressure of what everyone is saying or doing, but to me that leaves me hollow inside knowing that my words truly impacts people. I witness this at all of my shows. Especially when I travel out of state. People talk to me about their pain and even previous mindsets that they were able to free themselves of. I am a servant of my community and myself through my artistic expression. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I wear many hats, but I am truly an Artist & Song Writer. My music falls under Alternative Hip Hop. Imagine Kid Cudi and Drake had a baby haha. I am known for my live performances blending genres and giving a high energy performance with catchy melodies and introspective lyrics that people can relate to in their own lives. I have two types of Lives shows one with my full band and the second is with my Dj and Drummer. I am most proud of the connections I build with my audience through my music and when the music is not playing. I am truly present with the people that want to engage with me. I feel every moment is precious and that if I’m able to provide any type of comfort or value along with entertaining you I am doing my life’s work. There are many things that set me apart from everyone else, but I would have to say my authenticity. I’m not hear hoping to convince you of something that I’m not. I am a young black, entrepreneur that has nerd influences in every way you can think of. Along with influences that range all the back to the 1960s such as Motown. Every day I’m inspired and filled with passion that I want to share with the world. Each song and show I am one step closer to fulfilling my purpose.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The best thing to do is immerse yourself into what you love. You can be inspired by the greats, but do your best to be original. Always experiment and truly love yourself. Don’t allow others opinions to shape how you view yourself. That will take you a long way. Also others will always be late to the party so be great at cultivating your own bubble. This is what I’ve done and more
