Today we’d like to introduce you to N. Clay Cua.
Hi N. Clay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
An early love for creating and building led me to pursue different design avenues in art and industrial technology. These experiences made it clear that the field of design is where I belong and will thrive. Obtaining a BFA in Industrial Design at the Columbus College of Art & Design equipped me with the necessary skills and techniques to found, own, and operate Oakmond.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The largest challenge Oakmond has had is obtaining the machines and tooling necessary to create masterpieces. Starting out with a few tools my grandfather passed down was difficult but I figured out how to do more with less. As the years progressed, I began to upgrade my machines and tools and Oakmond became more efficient while adding to our arsenal.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Specializing in designing and creating high-end custom furniture for exceptional clients using mixed mediums including, but not limited to, wood and iron is what we do. We build tables, benches, shelving, etc. Where our skills shine though, and where we surpass our competition is designing, creating and delivering unique, one-of-a-kind pieces you can’t find anywhere else.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
No risk, no reward. Oakmond’s first large project was from an event company seeking a 16′ round bar. I didn’t even know if it could be created because of building challenges such as arcing solid wood. Not to mention the large amount of money I would have in material and trying to deliver an apartment-sized piece unscathed. The project was a success and is still in use to this day.
