Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Klatt

Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve had a background in customer-facing roles since I started working at fourteen. (Food and beverage, hospitality, etc.) Working with people and creating an atmosphere of top-tier hospitality has always made my heart sing! Call it the people pleaser in me, but I always say this: If you were out to dinner or on vacation, how would you want each experience to be? The best, suitable? One bad mood can crush your vibe and make the experience lackluster. I’m overjoyed when I’m able to make others smile.

Naturally, my life brought me back to that in the best possible way — as a wedding and event planner. After having a very rough wedding planning experience, I wanted to be that support system I needed while in the thick of everything. First, I needed some experience. Starting in the industry, I worked with a phenomenal luxury wedding planner (Nicole from Sirpilla Soirees) as her intern to gain experience. It was the best three months of my life up to that point as she showed through action how a wedding planner should be driven, collaborative, and creative in navigating the difficulties associated with event planning. She fostered a “community over competition” environment that excited me! Unfortunately, the pandemic began and brought all activities to a screeching halt.

Despite the bad news of the pandemic, I was determined to set out on my own to create my mark in the wedding and events industry! MK Events began in 2020, operating out of my home and meeting clients in coffee shops. Though the first year meant no work regarding events, I used that year to aggressively pursue my Event Planning certification from the New York Institute of Art and Design online.

In 2021, we started making a comeback, and in 2022-23, we saw events in full swing! It was so exciting to see everyone having a good time and making memories again. To this day, MK Events was created with a heavy focus on being supportive of moms. Too much in everyday life, we see how unforgiving the world is regarding moms— the lack of childcare, understanding, or support moms need to make it through the most challenging parts of their lives. For most moms who want to work, there’s almost ZERO understanding that you are a mom first. I started MK Events to combat what I had experienced as a new mom and create an environment where moms could feel accomplished in their work without feeling bad for being a parent.

In May of 2023, our creative magic, Kourtney Maddern, was added to #TeamMKEvents, and our growth has been phenomenal! We’re so excited to continue providing the best experiences for our clients to remain stress-free and grow our relationships with our clients and vendors. We look forward to more growth so even more incredible moms can join and develop our team!

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
NO. It’s been bumpy and comes with many twists and turns—but it’s worth it! Through my actions, I aim to tip the world on its head regarding treating moms (and parents) when we try our hardest to work hard and improve ourselves. The biggest challenge I’ve experienced is in networking. I feel there are so many people out there who have been networking all wrong. We should meet people with the presence of “How can I help you?” Rather than what I’ve experienced, “How will a relationship with you benefit me?” (I believe in Karma, though. So my good deeds will return tenfold!)

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a wedding and event planner. In my work, I take care of all the pieces of putting together a fabulous event, then run it so my clients remain stress-free. We’ve accomplished incredible events of all sorts: showers, celebrations of life, graduations, birthdays, and, of course, weddings. So much goes into an event that leaves a lasting impact on your guests. Our team takes care of it so clients can enjoy their event and soak up the memories! Our ability to come in to support at any time during the planning process sets us apart. Many vendors require full planning or hands-off work, with no in-between. We’re here to help you whenever our clients feel overwhelmed to tackle the tasks they’re having issues with!

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
If I could go back in time and tell younger me anything, it would be to believe in myself with every fiber of my being. I searched for praise from my loved ones so often and was afraid to take chances on myself when I didn’t get an enthusiastic response to my idea. Now, I’m loaded with all the success that those chances have brought so far, and I need to continue to push myself to more creative heights!
