Check Out Lisa Quine’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Quine.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I studied graphic design at the University of Dayton because I wanted a career in art, but this was in 2008 so I wanted something that was somewhat stable. I ended up absolutely loving it and landed a position as an art director after graduation. Outside of work in advertising, I started hand-lettering for fun and posting my work on Instagram. I started to grow an audience and commission inquires grew larger and larger. I went from doing restaurant chalkboards to full murals. Eventually, I got enough clients to start my own business and take my lettering and mural business full-time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Becoming a mom RIGHT when covid hit was the biggest struggle to date. My daughter was born on March 9, 2020 and then the whole world changed. Luckily I was already planning on taking it easy that year, but trying to work, avoid covid, and raise my daughter was a challenge. My husband and I went through a lot but landed back on track. My mental health took a hit in 2021 as burnout and depression crept in, but at the end of 2021 and this year, my family has been on the upswing and I’m back working on murals and design projects with plenty of energy to spare.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in vintage inspired lettering and illustration, as well as murals. I’m definitely proud of some of my more detailed and time-consuming murals, as well as some of my more unique illustration projects like hand-painting 100 hairbrushes for Aveda. I also wrote a book during my first trimester in 2019, despite fighting fatigue and sickness. I would say style sets me apart, I try not to lean too far into whatever is trendy at the moment, but I also try to crowd please too (especially with public-facing murals). Living and working in Cleveland, Ohio has helped me a ton as well because there’s a huge demand for murals, so I get to work on a lot around town.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I really don’t know! I put a lot out there on social media. I guess when I’m not looking at art inspiration, I’m constantly looking at interior design and have a passion for that!
