Today we’d like to introduce you to Leonna Kendricks.
Hi Leonna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I have been in love with all things art and beauty for as long as I can remember. When I was a little girl, I always wanted to be an actress when I grew up. I admired Angelina Jolie and her work; after I’d watch Salt or Mr. and Mrs. Smith, for example, I’d embody her demeanor and pretend I was on film performing a dramatic scene. I also have interest in visual art and have created and sold a few original pieces, along with designing and making my own clothing and accessories.
As I got older and my body began changing, knowing I had to maintain a certain appearance to be a part of the film and fashion world, I became fixated on perfecting my body and skin which introduced me to skincare, makeup, and hair removal around 12 years old.
Today, I am an Esthetician student at The Aveda Institute Columbus, graduating June 2023 and recently finished filming my third movie called Without Love, directed by Terrell Ujah, coming November 2023.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing worth it ever comes easy. But I do believe there is a fine line between fighting for it and forcing it. I got my first taste of acting at a very young age in church when we would put on Christmas plays every year for the community and focused on theatre in school, starring in about three productions during my time there as well. I auditioned for a few agencies and film roles, which was scary for a few reasons. I wasn’t confident in my body or skills at the time and the whole situation brings on this type of anxiety you didn’t even know you had until you’re thrown into this possibly life-changing opportunity, but they may also just be a huge scam and just want your money with no actual industry involvement. I heard a few too many “nos’” than my feelings could handle which began to make me second guess my purpose.
I had a hard time attracting attention to my oil canvases and clothing pieces as well. When COVID hit, I had more time on my hands than ever while I was pursuing my Associate’s Degree of Applied Science in Business Management which was also transitioned all online, against my preference. During that time, I was able to really hone in on my crafts and reflect on and understand the fact I create for my own sanity, not to please the public.
After I graduated, I just wanted more professional experience in the film and beauty industry and took a lot of jobs to get my foot in the door. Working mostly under woman, being a strong woman myself, I found myself struggling to even enjoy the work anymore due to contrasting personalities and expectations. I worked for one whole year after college and decided that would be the last year I will work for anybody else.
In January 2023, I put my life savings into beauty school. Going back to school was a tough but great decision as it feels very natural and affirming applying my God-given talents to technical skills.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I have starred in three independent films in the last three years, doing my own makeup and styling for them as well. I have been working on writing my own movie script for a few years now in hopes to produce it and provide exposure for more local actors and filmmakers soon.
As an Esthetician, I specialize in makeup, brows, body waxing, and treatments, and will further my education to add more tools and services to my belt, such as lashes, lamination, dermaplaning, permanent makeup, and other skincare and enhancing services.
I am very proud that the local films I have been involved in received such positive mass feedback and even won The Ohio Short Film Fest! Most recently, my friend Dee (Danasha Edgington), who models nationally, allowed me to do her makeup for the CCAD Fashion show. To have my hands broadcasted on such a beautiful woman, on such a lit stage with someone I’ve been talking to about our dreams since we were in high school together is so surreal, and I’m very grateful she invited me in on that experience.
I know I’m in the right place because given the chance, I am able to just produce something that I am very proud of and that astonishes others. I am very fulfilled, being able to do what I love, things that only I possess and will always be in demand.
