Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Scalmato

Hi Katie , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always loved art, and the process of creating. I discovered photography in High School, and had a wonderful photo teacher named Jim Roetzel. I have continuously evolved in the way I render the world around me. Photography allows me to capture beautiful moments in people’s lives. I love being the recorder of those memories. My work is a mixture of fine art portraiture, photo-journalism and love. I convey emotion through visual storytelling and small details, with a focus on timelessness. I specialize in photography for families, seniors and maternity.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
At times there were challenges getting to this point. I had a multi level cervical fusion surgery, prior to which I had dwindling mobility. It was a difficult time and I questioned whether I would be able to continue as an artist. The surgery was a success and I am able to live completely pain free!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in bright, colorful portraits that are full of life and laughter. I love working with families, soon to be parents and graduating seniors. There is so much excitement and possibility ahead and it’s a gift to celebrate with them! I am most proud of my ability to set people at ease during a photo shoot, and my background in early childhood education has been an asset in children’s photography. Capturing moments of joy, rather than stiff formal poses, sets me apart from other photographers. While I do include more formal photographs in my work, I also take candid photos- those moments in between, when affection between family members is shared.

What does success mean to you?
I would define success as feeling fulfilled in what you do.
