Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Harris.
Hi Jack, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was younger, I started with classical training, learning piano and violin, and singing in my school choir. As I grew up, I became obsessed with creating music, and when I discovered the power of GarageBand, I dove headfirst into the world of music production. I taught myself to play guitar in high school and began writing and recording songs. I refined my sound by playing live and constantly writing new songs. My sound is a mix of alternative rock, indie pop, and folk, which is a combination of all of my musical influences. In 2022 at The Ohio State University, I competed as a solo act in the OSU Battle of the Bands and won. The prize was getting to open for Tai Verdes and Taylor Bennett at The Newport Theatre in Columbus. Based in Cleveland, I’m currently releasing singles, recording new music, and playing live shows. I’m currently starring in a documentary about rock and roll legend Eddie Cochran as Eddie Cochran, which is being produced by a UK film company called Goldfinch. I have live shows lined up for August, September, and October, including support for The Wallflowers on The Kent Stage and Low-Cut Connie at The Grog Shop.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like many, I struggle with my mental health, dealing with anxiety and depression, so as an independent artist, the most important thing I have learned is to show up for myself. It’s easy to fall into bad habits and lose motivation for your passion when you’re dealing with your mental health, but I refuse to let that happen.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the center of my career, I am a musical artist, but for me, that goes hand-in-hand with a whole bunch of other skills that I’m proud to have. I’m a self-taught guitar player and music producer. I am a songwriter and performer. I edit my own music videos and do most of my own cover art. I am proud to be creative in more than one medium because I love being able to express my artistry in many ways.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First and foremost, my parents are major supporters of what I do. They raised me on good music and pushed me to explore the arts as I grew up, so I would not be where I am without their encouragement. One group of people I’ll always be grateful for is a Cleveland band called Falling Stars because in 2019, before I had ever recorded a song, they let me join one of their recording sessions and backed me on a few of my own songs which became my first ever studio-recorded tracks.
